Matthew McConaughey Warns Actors to "Own Yourself" Before AI Takes Over

Artificial Intelligence has made its presence known in Hollywood, leaving actors, directors, and producers discussing and debating its impact. While many continue to speculate about whether AI will take over, several companies, such as Disney and Paramount, have begun taking a stand to protect their intellectual property. And the latest to weigh in on the situation of AI is Matthew McConaughey.
During a conversation about AI and its growing presence in Hollywood, he gave a clear warning to his fellow actors and the world.

Matthew McConaughey believes that AI might continue to grow in the coming years and even infiltrate Hollywood. So, he urged that actors, in a conversation with Variety, must protect themselves by legally owning their voice, face, and identity so AI cannot copy or steal them without permission.
“So I say: Own yourself. Voice, likeness, et cetera. Trademark it. Whatever you gotta do, so when it comes, no one can steal you,” he said.
He seems to have taken that advice to heart for himself too. Back in November, he partnered with AI voice company ElevenLabs and gave them permission to create AI-generated samples of his voice in different languages. At the same time, the True Detective actor has used patent law to protect himself from possible misuse.
Reports say that he has got his eight trademark patents tied to his voice and likeness approved by the government. So while he has expressed concerns, the Interstellar actor has also used the weapon himself, creating a balanced example of what not to do with AI but also what to do with it. He went on to discuss more about AI with Timothée Chalamet at the CNN & Variety Town Hall Event.
McConaughey's did not simply stop at warning actors about AI usage but also predicted a future where one of the most prestige award shows in Hollywood would be affected by it.
Matthew McConaughey voiced concern over AI in the Oscars
Matthew McConaughey has not only issued a warning to actors but has also voiced his concerns about AI, which has been rapidly growing and causing unprecedented issues. The Gentlemen star even went on to add that AI might even get its own category at the Oscars and compete with real actors and films during his conversation with Variet.
“Will we be, in five years, having ‘the best AI film’? ‘The best AI actor?'” he said.

Moreover, he pointed out that videos and photos generated from AI are becoming more realistic than ever before. And that is what makes the line between reality and AI blurred, as he added. So, McConaughey’s only advice is that actors and individuals must protect themselves if the technology were to intrude.
