If there is something more profound than a Matthew McConaughey performance, it is his interviews. Recently, he gave another one of his iconic interviews, and this time the topic that came out in the spotlight was his way of parenting and how he helps his children find what they are naturally talented at.

On Thursday, August 13, Matthew McConaughey spoke to Variety before being felicitated with Variety’s Legend & Groundbreaker Award at Filmland in Arkansas on Friday. He talked about his acting journey, his upcoming projects, his recent stint as a professor at the University of Texas, and his Keep Livin’ Foundation, which helps less privileged and troubled youth.
While talking about helping young kids, the conversation shifted to his own children and his and his wife Camila Alves McConaughey’s parenting approach. According to him, they are both trying to equip their children with the skills and constantly guide them towards the things they love to do and, most importantly, are naturally adept at.
“Camila and I are trying to teach them and show them and put things in front of them that help them find what hopefully they, one, love to do, but, secondly, are inherently gifted to do,” he explains.

Explaining further in the Variety interview, the actor explained how, with the capitalist nature of modern society, it is something of a miracle to be able to cash in on something you are actually passionate about. This will also ensure what they do, they will be the best at it. This advice by McConaughey is both practical and aspirational, which more and more parents should follow.

The Rivals of Amziah King will open in select cinemas on Friday after receiving a rare standing ovation at SXSW last March. The Matthew McConaughey Cinema, the recently rebranded Alamo Drafthouse cinema in Austin, where he resides, will be one of the theaters screening the film.
