Nic Pizzolatto is not merely entertaining the idea of another True Detective mystery; the creator apparently already imagined where Rust Cohle and Marty Hart could go next back in 2025. Pizzolatto has said he has discussed reuniting with Matthew McConaughey and Woody Harrelson, with a character-driven story in mind that would bring the Season 1 detectives back together.

Matthew McConaughey has made his own position remarkably clear, saying a strong enough script from Pizzolatto would make returning feel like something that “must happen.” The bigger question, however, is whether Woody Harrelson’s firm refusal can change, because Pizzolatto can have the story and McConaughey can have the enthusiasm, but Marty Hart remains the missing piece.
