Apple TV+ has unveiled the first look at Brothers, a new comedy series starring Matthew McConaughey and Woody Harrelson as fictionalized versions of themselves. Inspired by the long-running rumor that the two actors could be related, the show follows the pair as a family secret resurfaces and forces them to question what they know about their past. The idea stems from a real-life conversation the actors had while vacationing in Greece with their families. The discussion took an unexpected turn when McConaughey's mother revealed she had known Harrelson's father before McConaughey was born, fueling speculation that the two stars could be half-brothers.

Each episode reportedly begins with the phrase, "Based on a true rumor," with the series using McConaughey and Harrelson's real-life friendship as inspiration while telling a largely fictional story.

While Matthew McConaughey and Woody Harrelson play versions of themselves, the show's creators leaned heavily into comedy and exaggeration. Showrunner Lee Eisenberg explained that the goal was never to create a documentary-style project but rather a heartfelt comedy inspired by the actors' lives and personalities. McConaughey described the process as embracing fictional exaggerations and playful parodies of public perceptions surrounding both stars.

The series also highlights the decades-long friendship between the two actors, who first played brothers in the 1999 comedy EDtv before reuniting as detectives in HBO's True Detective in 2014.  Harrelson recently joked that fans expecting another True Detective reunion may be surprised by Brothers, emphasizing that the new series takes a much lighter and more comedic approach.

"If you like True Detective and you want more of that, it's not this." Harrelson said.

Over the years, they have become known for their close bond, shared sense of humor, and frequent family vacations together. Brothers premieres on Apple TV+ on September 23, blending comedy, family drama, and Hollywood self-parody.
