Matthew McConaughey has recently revealed that he is in active talks with Yellowstone creator Taylor Sheridan about a possible spin-off. The original neo-western drama became one of television's biggest hits, following the powerful Dutton family as they fought to protect their sprawling Montana ranch among family conflicts, political battles and threats from outside forces. Yellowstone, created by Sheridan and John Linson, has likewise become a burgeoning franchise of interconnected stories across eras and generations of the Dutton family.

Now, the long-running speculation around McConaughey’s potential Yellowstone debut may finally have some new hope. 

Matthew McConaughey has confirmed that discussions with Yellowstone creator Taylor Sheridan about a potential spin-off are still happening, leaving the door open for the actor to join the franchise. There have been long-running talks about McConaughey possibly joining a Yellowstone project, with speculation that he could play John Dutton or another character in a series set in the 1950s. Speaking on The Playlist's Discourse Podcast, the actor said he and Sheridan have talked about what the project might become, but nothing has been decided. 

"Taylor and I have spoken and have continued to have conversations about what [it could be] and if that would be whatever. But nothing’s real yet," he said, emphasizing that that the project is still only in the early discussion stage. 

McConaughey also said on The Playlist's Discourse podcast, that he has time remaining on his deal with Paramount. This could allow for another Yellowstone project to occur. Meanwhile, Sheridan continues to grow the franchise while managing a number of other television projects. 

In April 2023, Paramount executive Chris McCarthy said during an interview with The Hollywood Reporter that Matthew McConaughey, who champions a whopping net worth, was in talks to star in the franchise expansion. Additionally, Sheridan told The Hollywood Reporter in June 2023 that the actor was a "natural fit" and that their recent conversations picked up steam after McConaughey watched the series. He apparently expressed an interest in examining its gritty world and the push and pull of tradition vs. modern life.

The series has been a success and has spawned prequels and spin-offs such as 1883, 1923 and Dutton Ranch, which explore the history of the Dutton family over generations. Dutton Ranch is about protecting their sprawling cattle ranch, facing down ruthless land developers, government forces, and internal strife.

Meanwhile, Matthew McConaughey’s potential involvement in the Yellowstone universe is still in negotiations, with no official casting or production details yet released. But his ongoing talks with Taylor Sheridan indicate the possibility has not gone away. As the franchise’s universe continues to grow and Sheridan’s slate of projects keeps expanding, fans may have to wait a bit longer to see if McConaughey will officially step into the world of the Duttons.
