Matt Smith has cast a cloud of uncertainty over Daemon’s legendary Gods Eye showdown, hinting the fiery, sky-bound duel from Fire and Blood may not unfold as fans expect. Daemon Targaryen’s arc in House of the Dragon has been a whirlwind of ambition, guilt, and war. From his early days as a ruthless prince to his uneasy alliance with his wife Rhaenyra, he oscillates between war mode and self-destruction.

In Season 2, he flees Team Black HQ, allies with a witch, and manipulates events in the Riverlands, all while wrestling with visions of his own death. Eagle-eyed fans of the books know that Daemon’s path eventually leads to one of the most legendary dragon fights in Targaryen history: the Battle Above the Gods Eye.

Now, Matt Smith has just let us in on whether that moment will appear in the TV series.

Matt Smith tempers expectations around Daemon’s Gods Eye destiny

When SFX magazine asked Matt Smith specifically about fan hopes of seeing the Gods Eye brought to life in House of the Dragon.

“One assumes they're headed there, but you never know. It's quite present in the story, isn't it? Even in the book, it's been illustrated. It's surely got to head there, but I'm not privy to the details of it until the script. But I'm going to cross my fingers too.”

His answer to SFX magazine is cautious but hopeful: he expects the storyline to move toward the Gods Eye, yet he admits he only learns the full details when the script arrives. In George R. R. Martin’s Fire & Blood, the Battle Above the Gods Eye occurs in 130 AC during the Dance of the Dragons. Daemon rides Caraxes against Aemond, who commands the ancient dragon Vhagar.

The two dragons crash into the lake called the Gods Eye near Harrenhal; Daemon jumps onto Vhagar and impales Aemond through his remaining eye, killing both men and both dragons in a mutual kill. On the show, Season 2 already foreshadowed this with Daemon’s vision of drowning in a lake and dialogue about the Gods Eye swallowing Aemond.

Something to even top Game of Thrones?

Season 2 of House of the Dragon leaned heavily into political tension and character study, but it also planted seeds for larger, more explosive conflicts. Viewers have been waiting for the series to unleash its most iconic battles. Season 3 is expected to raise that intensity, with major set pieces like the Battle of the Gullet poised to deliver the kind of spectacle fans associate with the franchise.

The production scale continues to grow, pushing the show closer to the cinematic heights once set by Game of Thrones. That makes the question of the Gods Eye even more intriguing. If the series does commit to that legendary duel, it could become one of the defining moments of the entire show.

If it does not, the writers will need an equally powerful alternative to close Daemon’s arc. Either way, the tension between expectation and surprise is now part of the experience.
