Matt Damon Recalls Offending Christopher Nolan With a Comment About Emily Blunt’s Craft

Published 03/15/2026, 4:41 PM EDT

Matt Damon and Ben Affleck practically wrote the blueprint of friendship, turning their early breakthrough into decades of creative camaraderie. But every so often, a different kind of partnership begins to draw attention. Lately, Damon seems to have found that dynamic with Emily Blunt. His respect for her performances has become increasingly evident in interviews, sometimes spilling out in ways that sound almost like a critic’s analysis rather than a co-star’s compliment.

And as Damon recently discovered, praising one of Blunt’s performances a little too enthusiastically can have unintended consequences, especially when the comment happens to reach a director as exacting as Christopher Nolan.

Appearing on a January episode of the The Joe Rogan Experience, Matt Damon shared a humorous anecdote about a conversation with Christopher Nolan that did not land the way he expected. Reflecting on Emily Blunt’s range, Damon reportedly told the director that she might have been at her absolute best in The Smashing Machine. Nolan, clearly protective of the performances in his own films, immediately fired back:

“She was pretty f****** good in my movie too!”, Nolan said.

Damon’s comment referenced The Smashing Machine, the 2025 biographical sports drama about legendary MMA fighter Mark Kerr. In the film, Blunt portrays Kerr’s wife, Dawn Staples, navigating the emotional turbulence surrounding Kerr’s rise in the brutal world of mixed martial arts. The project is directed by Benny Safdie and stars Dwayne Johnson as Kerr, marking a rare dramatic transformation for the actor.

Yet Damon’s anecdote arrives at a moment when Blunt’s career seems to be expanding in multiple directions at once. With renewed attention around The Devil Wears Prada legacy and fresh trailers teasing new projects, the actor appears to be entering another high-profile chapter.

Emily Blunt joins Steven Spielberg’s new sci-fi event film

Universal Pictures has officially released the first trailer for Disclosure Day, a new original sci-fi event film created and directed by legendary filmmaker Steven Spielberg, starring Emily Blunt. The upcoming blockbuster explores the terrifying and awe-inspiring reality of extraterrestrial disclosure to the global public, asking what would happen if humanity suddenly learned, beyond doubt, that we are not alone in the universe.

Meanwhile, Spielberg is also expected to attend the Academy Awards this year to support Hamnet, which he produced.

Written by longtime Spielberg collaborator David Koepp, whose credits include Jurassic Park and War of the Worlds, the film centers on a global revelation event that forces governments, scientists, and ordinary citizens to confront the implications of extraterrestrial life. The ensemble cast includes Blunt alongside Josh O’Connor, Colin Firth, Eve Hewson, and Colman Domingo.

Produced through Spielberg’s Amblin Entertainment with longtime producing partner Kristie Macosko Krieger, the film marks the director’s return to blockbuster sci-fi following his acclaimed 2022 drama The Fabelmans.

If Matt Damon’s story proves anything, it is that admiration in Hollywood can sometimes lead to the most entertaining misunderstandings. But one thing is clear: Emily Blunt’s momentum shows no signs of slowing down.
