Matt Damon has experienced the kind of career year that even Hollywood veterans would struggle to plan for, but he is not taking another extraordinary success for granted. Following the phenomenal reception of Christopher Nolan’s The Odyssey, the actor is looking back at two career-defining experiences that arrived nearly three decades apart. For Damon, however, the real reward is making meaningful films and continuing to collaborate with the people who have been part of his journey.
But while another career milestone might be tempting to imagine, the actor is far more interested in appreciating what has already come his way.
Matt Damon is grateful for another once-in-a-lifetime experience
During a conversation with GQ, Matt Damon was asked whether he could envision a third career-defining moment after Good Will Hunting and The Odyssey. Damon was careful not to turn that gratitude into an expectation.
“I don’t want to sound like a broken record, but I have such gratitude for the fact that this came along my path at this point. I have no right to expect anything like that to happen again," he explained.

Rather than chasing another extraordinary achievement, he wants to keep making good films and, importantly, continue working with Affleck. The two have already reunited professionally through The Rip, their crime thriller produced through Artists Equity, the company they founded together. Damon also reflected on their childhood ambitions, saying they had reached a point where they could simply embrace the opportunity to keep working together.
However, even an actor who has spent much of the year immersed in ambitious productions eventually reaches a point when the prospect of stepping away becomes more appealing than chasing the next big opportunity.
Matt Damon is ready for a long break after his next project
In the same GQ conversation, Matt Damon was asked whether a year as extraordinary as this one had made him eager to take a breather or jump straight into another 10 projects. Interestingly, he revealed that he had not initially planned to work again so soon. That changed when Daniel Kwan and Daniel Scheinert, collectively known as the Daniels, approached him with their latest film. The filmmaking duo behind Everything Everywhere All at Once presented him with something so unusual and fresh, an untitled science-fiction film.
“...So it felt like the right place to put my energy, but we’re almost done shooting it, and yeah, I’m going to take a long time off,” he shared.

However, the actor is already thinking about stepping away once filming wraps. Damon told GQ that production was nearly complete and that he intended to take a long time off afterward. His comments also offered another glimpse into his enduring friendship with Affleck.
For now, Damon seems content to let this remarkable chapter speak for itself. He has another ambitious collaboration behind him, an intriguing project with the Daniels nearing completion, and a longtime creative partnership he has no intention of abandoning.
Do you think stepping away after such a demanding year is the right move for Matt Damon, or should he keep riding this remarkable career momentum? Let us know in the comments.
