After just three weekends in theaters, Masters of the Universe has reportedly grossed only $101 million worldwide, emerging as one of Amazon MGM's weakest-performing big-budget releases in recent years. The film is a live-action take on the classic Mattel franchise, featuring Nicholas Galitzine as Prince Adam/He-Man and a bunch of other characters. It re-imagines the battle for Eternia for a new generation, while drawing on the mythology that made the original series a cultural phenomenon.
Meanwhile, as the reboot's theatrical prospects continue to fade, its weak performance across key markets tells the story of a troubled global release.

Masters of the Universe has fallen short of expectations at the box office, earning just $101 million worldwide after three weekends in theaters. With an estimated $200 million production budget and roughly $100 million spent on marketing, the reboot is now projected to cost Amazon MGM more than $150 million in losses. Its performance has made it one of the studio's biggest theatrical setbacks in recent years.
The movie will predictably leave theaters as one of the year’s biggest bombs. It has added $5.6 million from 2,517 venues in its third weekend, bringing $56 million in North America and $101.9 million worldwide. It further suffered a harsh 71% drop in its second weekend.
As per Box Office Mojo, in the United Kingdom, the movie opened to $3.6 million and has grossed $5.7 million so far. Germany followed with a $1.9 million debut and a total haul of $2.89 million, while Spain brought in $1.34 million after opening to $673,836. These numbers highlight the reboot's struggles across several key international markets.
Despite the lackluster box office returns, the film itself offers an ambitious re-imagining of the classic He-Man mythology.
What happens in Masters of the Universe?
Featuring Nicholas Galitzine, Camila Mendes, Jared Leto, Idris Elba, Alison Brie, and Morena Baccarin, Masters of the Universe boasts a star-studded ensemble. It revolves around Adam, heir to the throne of Eternia. Now, he has to confront his true identity as He-Man and stop Skeletor from obtaining supreme power.

The movie is set on the premise of prophecies from ancient times, the love between friends and family, and the struggles of being a regular person. The plot takes off from Castle Grayskull to include cosmic elements that will threaten the entire universe's balance. Additionally, Adam's transformation into He-Man becomes a journey of self-discovery as much as a battle for Eternia's survival.
However, despite the effort put into reviving the franchise, the film has failed in bringing the movie to life in a way that resonates with ticket sales. It provides an expansive story revolving around destiny, magic, and space war, but unfortunately, very few people have gone out to watch the film. The huge difference between the scale of the movie and its commercial performance is evidence that the movie failed to deliver a box office hit this year.
