Director Travis Knight said recently he chose to build Masters of the Universe around the original toys, mini-comics, and 1980s cartoon because the franchise's decades of continuity are too inconsistent to follow as a single canon. The world of He-Man has evolved through countless cartoons, comics, films, and reboots since its debut in the early 1980s. With so many different interpretations of the iconic hero and his allies, fans have long debated which version best represents the spirit of the franchise.
As Masters of the Universe prepares to bring Eternia back to the big screen, director Travis Knight faced the challenge of honoring a beloved property while creating something that could stand on its own. His approach offers insight into how the new adaptation found its identity amid decades of storytelling.

Rather than treating every previous version of He-Man as mandatory viewing, Travis Knight chose a more selective approach when building the new film. The director acknowledged that the franchise's long history presented unique challenges when deciding what elements should shape the latest adaptation.
“It's certainly something I thought about,” he said at a press event to GamesRadar+ and continued, “But anytime you've got a property like this, a world and a series of characters that have been around for over four decades, the continuity is going to be all over the place. And it is in this property. It's wildly internally inconsistent. So, in the end, you have to decide what you embrace and what you leave behind."
Knight explained that he did not feel obligated to follow previous interpretations of the character. Instead, he leaned heavily on the original toy line, mini-comics, and the classic Filmation cartoon as the foundation for the movie, while selectively borrowing ideas from later adaptations.
With the creative vision now taking shape on screen, the film's commercial prospects are also generating excitement ahead of release.
Masters of the Universe's strong early momentum ahead of release
Amazon MGM Studios appears to have another major theatrical contender on its hands. Masters of the Universe is tracking for a strong opening weekend, fueled by positive early reactions, Travis Knight's reputation from films such as Kubo and the Two Strings and Bumblebee, and growing fan anticipation. The momentum suggests the long-running franchise could be poised for one of its most successful big-screen launches to date.
The studio recently received another boost when IMAX announced that the film will receive an IMAX release beginning June 5 alongside its standard and Dolby screenings. The premium format rollout is expected to enhance the movie's launch and could help it secure a larger audience during the opening weekend, even replacing The Mandalorian & Grogu in IMAX theaters after only two weeks.

As excitement continues to build, both longtime fans and newcomers will soon discover whether Knight's decision to return to He-Man's roots was the right move for the franchise's next chapter. If early reactions and box office projections are any indication, the filmmaker's back-to-basics approach may already be resonating with audiences.
