Marvel’s X-Men reboot brings in hit TV creators to rewrite the script, marking a significant step in the film’s development. Director Jake Schreier recently opened up about the progress, confirming that Lee Sung Jin and Joanna Calo are actively working on a new draft. Their involvement reunites a creative team that has already delivered critically acclaimed work on Beef, THE BEAR and Thunderbolts*. During a conversation with Collider’s Steve Weintraub about Beef Season 2, Jake Schreier also shared an update on the progress of Marvel’s X-Men reboot.

"We're still developing. You know, one of the exciting things that's tying into Beef is that Sonny [Lee Sung Jin] and Joanna [Calo] both worked on this season. Obviously, I mean, Beef is Sonny's show, and Joanna worked on the season as well, and we worked together on Season 1 of Beef and on Thunderbolts*. They have come in and are working on a draft right now, which is really exciting to be able to put that group of people together again." he told Collider exclusively.

This collaboration signals Marvel’s intent to lean into emotionally rich, character-driven storytelling, something both writers have mastered in their respective shows. If executed well, it could bring the kind of layered interpersonal drama that has always set the X-Men apart from other superhero teams.

But while Marvel looks ahead, Oscar Isaac recently shared how his past X-Men experience revealed just how challenging bringing mutants to life can be.

Oscar Isaac reflects on his X-Men Experience

Long before the reboot began taking shape, Oscar Isaac had his own memorable and challenging experience in the mutant universe with X-Men: Apocalypse. His reflections offer a glimpse into the realities of bringing these larger-than-life characters to the screen. During an appearance on Hot Ones, Oscar Isaac explained that his decision to join the film was largely driven by the opportunity to work alongside powerhouse actors like Michael Fassbender, Jennifer Lawrence, and James McAvoy. However, the reality proved quite different.

“One of the big reasons I did the job, I was like, ‘Fassbender? Jennifer Lawrence? McAvoy? All these amazing actors. Yeah!” he said, highlighting his initial excitement. “And then I never saw any of them because I was so overheated. And like, I couldn’t turn. So, I just got put in this cooling tent,” Oscar Isaac added.

The heavy layers of latex and glue made it difficult for him to interact with co-stars, leaving him largely separated from the ensemble both on and off camera. Despite the challenges and the film’s mixed reception, Oscar Isaac has rarely spoken negatively about the project.

With a fresh writing team in place and a director who clearly values character-driven storytelling, Marvel’s X-Men reboot appears to be heading in a thoughtful new direction. Drawing from the emotional complexity and ideological depth that define the comics, the film has the potential to balance spectacle with deeply personal stakes.
