The closer Avengers: Doomsday gets, the more it feels like Marvel is guarding a box of matches in a room full of gasoline. The cast is enormous, the multiverse is collapsing, familiar heroes are returning, and nobody can quite tell which characters will survive the collision or even make it through the opening act. Even the question of how the film begins has become its own mystery.

Now, a new revelation has thrown Tobey Maguire's Spider-Man directly into that puzzle, and it could point to one of the most gloriously chaotic openings Marvel has ever considered.

Tobey Maguire was reportedly meant to enter Doomsday swinging

In part one of his August 2026 Q&A with The Cosmic Circus Discord and Patreon members, insider Alex Perez addressed the long-running speculation surrounding the beginning of Avengers: Doomsday. The original intent was reportedly to open with Tobey Maguire's Spider-Man and his rogues gallery fighting the X-Men. Perez added an intriguing wrinkle, however.

He did not know whether Marvel ultimately brought the villains into the sequence or reduced the confrontation to Peter Parker himself. His revelation is almost tailor-made for the multiverse madness Marvel has been building toward. It also exposes the logistical headache behind such an extravagant crossover.

If Tobey's Spider-Man is already occupied entertaining Deadpool & Wolverine, then the obvious question becomes which X-Men are actually fighting him? The bigger confirmation is Tobey himself. Asked whether Maguire survives both Doomsday and Secret Wars, Perez declined to reveal his fate but confirmed that sources have told him Maguire appears in both films.

The opening mystery becomes even more fascinating once the trailer enters the picture.

The trailer makes the multiverse collision impossible to ignore

The first full trailer has already shown Marvel moving beyond the familiar Avengers formula, opening on the battered X-Mansion and positioning Professor X within the aftermath of an incursion. The footage then starts stitching together the Avengers, Fantastic Four and returning X-Men, while Robert Downey Jr.'s Doctor Doom emerges as the gravitational center of the entire disaster. That makes the rumored Tobey sequence particularly interesting.

If Marvel really intended to begin with Spider-Man fighting the X-Men, it would be a deliberately disorienting way to announce that the old rules no longer apply. Rather than easing audiences into another Avengers team-up, Doomsday could throw them straight into a comic-book fever dream where universes collide before anyone has time to ask why. With Steve Rogers returning and multiple legacy X-Men back in the frame, Marvel appears to be leaning heavily into the emotional and nostalgic ammunition of its Multiverse Saga.

Whether that exact Spider-Man versus X-Men opening survived production remains unknown, but the ingredients are clearly on the table. Doomsday is shaping up to be less about assembling one team and more about smashing entire corners of Marvel history together.
