Shaquille O’Neal is sitting out Avengers: Doomsday and, it seems, the entire Avengers saga. O’Neal has appeared in commercials, reality shows, and even a DC superhero film since retiring from basketball. His larger-than-life persona has made him a pop culture fixture across multiple industries. Yet one dream remains unfulfilled.

He will not be making it to Avengers: Doomsday.

Shaquille O’Neal wanted an Avengers role, but Marvel had one major concern

In an exclusive interview with Variety, Shaquille O’Neal revealed that Marvel Studios rejected his bid to join the MCU.

“I wanted to be in the ‘Avengers’ and they were like, ‘Shaq, we f******’ love you and we’d love to put you in, but if your face pops up on screen people are going to go, ‘Hey, that’s Shaq!’ He said it truthfully, and I was like, alright… I guess my face is too bigtime.”

O’Neal told Variety that Hollywood executives have consistently cited his recognizability as a barrier to serious acting roles.

“I would love to do more action roles but we were told by top Hollywood executives that I’m too big, and what they mean by that is when I pop up on the screen everyone will go, ‘Oh, that’s Shaq!’” This feedback has limited his opportunities to play characters beyond cameos or self-parody.The NBA legend explained the practical implications of this typecasting.

“So, if I’m trying to play a doctor or anything, my character won’t be believable,” O’Neal stated. Despite this setback, he remains active in entertainment, with appearances in Scary Movie and Grown Ups 3. He also expressed interest in a film matchup with Dwayne “The Rock” Johnson, claiming he could “beat him up” with ease.

Will Jonathan Majors Appear in ‘Avengers: Doomsday’?

While Shaq missed his superhero crossover, Marvel has found another way to bring a familiar MCU face back into the conversation.

Iman Vellani leads Marvel’s countdown to Doomsday

Iman Vellani, known for her role as Kamala Khan in Ms. Marvel, will return to the MCU through a new official podcast. The five-episode series, titled Countdown to Avengers: Doomsday, debuts on August 27 and will be hosted by Vellani alongside podcaster Frank Alvarez. Episodes will be released weekly on Disney+, Marvel’s YouTube channel, and all major audio platforms.

The podcast will recap key moments from the MCU rather than reveal new plot details about Doomsday. The final episode will cover Avengers: Endgame, aligning with the theatrical re-release of Endgame Encore. This approach allows fans to revisit the franchise’s history while building anticipation for the December 18 premiere. The movie could make up for some delicious superhero pairings on screen.

Vellani’s involvement comes despite her absence from the confirmed Doomsday cast. None of the three female leads from The Marvels have been announced for the film, though fans expect Kamala Khan to appear in a cameo or play a larger role in Avengers: Secret Wars. David Harbour recently hinted at potential spoilers, while Sebastian Stan claimed he knows “absolutely nothing” about the plot.
