Marvel Boss Kevin Feige Stresses How Important Chris Evans and Robert Downey Jr. Are for ‘Avengers: Doomsday'
Marvel Studios is pushing its multiverse saga into uncharted territory as Avengers: Doomsday builds momentum after its CinemaCon 2026 showcase. With Chris Evans and Robert Downey Jr. slated to return, the film is shaping into a pivotal crossover event, and Marvel COO Kevin Feige has now asserted just how crucial their return is.
The narrative expands beyond familiar Avengers territory, blending characters from multiple universes while raising the stakes of reality itself. At the center of it all lies a creative decision that could redefine the MCU’s future direction.
As the multiverse expands with new alliances and threats, the real surprise lies in why two returning icons became absolutely essential to this unfolding narrative.

Kevin Feige on Robert Downey Jr. and Chris Evans in Avengers: Doomsday
Kevin Feige makes it clear: bringing back Robert Downey Jr. and Chris Evans was essential to Avengers: Doomsday. Their return was not nostalgia, but a narrative necessity. After years of discussions post-Avengers: Endgame, the idea finally aligned creatively and strategically.
“It was, I want to say, early 2023, that we started saying, maybe we actually think this could really work. And then I went to his abode and pitched in this idea,” Feige said in an interview with Fandango about Downey Jr., adding he was very excited about it. Joe Russo pitched in as well, asserting that the actors' return was inevitable, if not important, for the story's continuation.
“We're very close with Chris. We're obviously very close with Marvel. It felt to us like the correct way for us to come back would be to continue the story of that character to work with Robert again, and to move the story forward,” Russo said.
In Avengers: Doomsday, Downey Jr. takes on a bold reinvention as Victor von Doom, not a variant but the primary antagonist shaping multiversal collapse. His portrayal introduces a calculated villain always ahead of the heroes. Meanwhile, Evans returns as Steve Rogers, now living a quiet family life after Avengers: Endgame. However, Doom’s threat forces him back into action, leading to powerful moments like reclaiming Mjolnir and reuniting with Thor.
While their roles redefine past legacies, the timeline itself reveals how deeply this story connects to the MCU’s evolving structure.
Avengers: Doomsday timeline and MCU placement
Set in the late post-Avengers: Endgame era, Avengers: Doomsday unfolds firmly within the MCU’s current timeline. Kevin Feige confirmed at CinemaCon that it continues existing storylines while expanding backward to include the original X-Men universe. The film centers on multiversal incursions causing realities to collide, forcing the Avengers, the Fantastic Four, and X-Men to unite. This convergence creates an existential crisis where alliances shift rapidly under Doctor Doom’s calculated influence.
