The 2026 Emmy Awards ceremony had some tough competition with notable performances from Widow’s Bay, Rooster, and Only Murders in the Building. The category featured a powerful lineup of contenders, including Martin Short, who has been nominated multiple times for the role, along with Yahya Abdul-Mateen II, Steve Carell, Matthew Rhys, and Jason Segel. Ultimately, Rhys took home the award after his incredible performance as Tom Loftis in Widow’s Bay.

While the entire crowd erupted in cheers, praise, and applause, Short had a very different reaction to losing the category for the fifth time. Although he may have missed out on the honor once again, the actor certainly won fans over with his hilarious reaction. 

After Matthew Rhys received the Outstanding Lead Actor in a Comedy Series award at the 2026 Emmy Awards, he took the stage to share a few words about the moment. For a brief time, the camera also panned toward the audience and the other contenders in the category, including Martin Short. As the crowd applauded, Short hilariously ripped up a white piece of paper in frustration before breaking into laughter.

  He appeared to pretend that the white paper was his speech, or perhaps it actually was. Either way, as seen in the clip, the actor stole the show with his hilarious reaction to the loss. Short certainly joked about the situation while being happy for Rhys, who won the honor.  The actor has been nominated in the category 4 times for his performance as Oliver Putnam in Only Murders in the Building. However, Short has yet to win the honor. However, he previously won a SAG Award for Outstanding Performance by a Male Actor in a Comedy Series, but his Emmy hopes are not over. The actor is set to return for the sixth season of Only Murders in the Building.

As for Matthew Rhys, the actor has made Emmy history with his win in the comedy category.

Matthew Rhys won Lead Actor in a Limited or Anthology Series or Movie for his performance in Widow’s Bay. The actor’s second win of the night came when he was honored with the award for Outstanding Lead Actor in a Comedy Series. What makes this a record for Rhys is that he is the first man to receive two lead acting Emmys in a single night.

Moreover, Rhys already boasts a Lead Actor win from 2018 for his performance in The Americans. This makes him the first actor to win the Lead Actor Emmy across all three genres. Meanwhile, Widow’s Bay had a strong night overall, winning 14 Emmys from 19 nominations. However, amid all the wins and losses, moments like Martin Short's hilarious moment managed to steal the show.
