While the photo looks like a legends convention crashed a cocktail hour, the real story involves a French president and some very shiny honors.

The four legends were photographed in New York on Tuesday night, during the French Légion d’honneur ceremony on September 22. An X account named Leonardo DiCaprio Update posted a 25-second clip on Wednesday, September 23. Martin Scorsese beams from the center as Leonardo DiCaprio waves beside him, Robert De Niro peeks over his shoulder, and Daniel Day-Lewis completes the star-studded lineup from the back.

The star-studded photo, shared by an X account, was part of a French celebration rather than a Hollywood reunion. During his New York visit for the UN General Assembly, President Emmanuel Macron honored Scorsese as a Grand Officer of the Legion of Honour at Villa Albertine for his work preserving film heritage. De Niro was also named an Officer for his contributions to film education, while Jodie Foster joined DiCaprio among the distinguished guests.

While Scorsese collected French honors, a film carrying his producer credit met ruder reviews in Toronto, with an AI co-star.

Trees Are Watching arrived at the Toronto International Film Festival with a horror premise, a Kurdish legend, Eva Green in the lead, and Martin Scorsese as executive producer. Director Bahman Ghobadi then watched critics ignore all of that and fixate on the artificial star. Variety led the harsh reviews, flagging entire flashbacks, mythological asides, and transitional visuals as products of generative tools. 

The reviews traced the artificial imagery to overhead footage of felled trees and long driving sequences, while reviewers urged festivals to consider mandatory disclosure. Kinder outlets praised the eerie chair scenes and called the film an interesting misfire. Ironically, Scorsese joined Black Forest Labs as an adviser in June and used its FLUX model in preproduction. Pixels struggled in Toronto, but Scorsese and his three legends still delivered Hollywood's rarest photo.
