Yellowstone spin-off series, Marshals season 1 ended with one of the most shocking cliffhangers, which is sure to keep fans guessing until the truth is finally revealed. Kayce Dutton was betrayed by someone whom he trusted the most in this season. And it is safe to say that not only Kayce, but the viewers, too, had formed a deep connection with the character throughout the entire season.
While the character managed to maintain the facade amid the Dutton drama throughout the season, the final few minutes of the last episode of the show, titled Wolves at the Door, dropped the jaw-dropping truth. Worst of all, Kayce Dutton and the rest of the team have yet to discover the betrayal.

Tom Weaver, played by Chris Mulkey, is the one who seemingly betrayed Kayce Dutton, portrayed by Luke Grimes, in the series, Marshals. Weaver is introduced in the series as a rancher from Southern Montana with a background on Wall Street. He is also shown to be a friend of Kayce and someone interested in buying his land. However, in the final episode of the show, Weaver suggested to Kayce that he would like to take his son, Tate, to Texas on a fishing trip.
While Kayce agrees and allows Tate to leave with his friend, the final few minutes of the episode reveal Jeb informing Weaver that, “It’s handled.” Jeb is the same man who was seen earlier when Cal and Belle were attacked in the episode. By this time, Tate had already boarded the private plane with Weaver.

Now, what exactly has been “handled” is not revealed, but one thing is certain, and that is Kayce’s son may not be safe. Weaver, as the unexpected man to betray Kayce Dutton, also brings several new complications. One of the most baffling questions is whether Dolly Weaver’s feelings for Kayce are and how much she actually knows about her father’s role in the situation.
Dolly and Kayce were previously seen growing closer to each other throughout the season. But more importantly, the final episode hints at Weaver’s involvement in the assassination attempt on Chief Rainwater. And that brings the episode to whether the attack on Chief Rainwater was successful?
Did Chief Rainwater survive the brutal assassination attempt?
After Miles and Mo are ambushed and attacked, they seek refuge at East Camp as Kayce Dutton tries to protect everyone. Meanwhile, Tate and Chief Thomas Rainwater, played by Gil Birmingham, hide upstairs. However, when East Camp is attacked by heavily armed and experienced gunmen, both Kayce and Mo step in to fight back.
Kayce Dutton even takes a bullet during the intense shootout. While Cal, Belle, Andrea, and Miles join the fight alongside Kayce against the attackers, one gunman manages to make his way into the cabin where Rainwater and Tate were hiding. It could have been the chief’s final moment until Tate stepped in to save the day.

He attacked the gunman to defend Thomas Rainwater. However, despite Rainwater surviving the attack, the series still has not revealed who is behind the brutal assassination attempts against him. And this investigation leads Cal, played by Logan Marshall-Green, and Belle, portrayed by Arielle Kebbel, to follow a clue connected to the leak of Rainwater’s location.
Their search eventually leads them to Jeb, the same man who works with Weaver. But before they can react, armed gunmen suddenly appear and open fire on the two. The scene ends on yet another major cliffhanger, adding to the already shocking twists in the show’s finale.
What happens to the Cal, Belle and Andrea?
Season 1 ended with fans feeling relieved that Kayce Dutton did not sell his land to the Weavers. And he seemed to have taken it quite well, too. After struggling throughout the season with the decision of whether he should let it go, Kayce ultimately chose to protect his family’s legacy, something the Duttons have fought hard to preserve for generations.

However, Marshals season 1 also concluded with several unanswered questions, one of the biggest being what happened to Cal and Belle after the attack. The answers to those mysteries will likely only be revealed when the new season arrives. While Weaver and Dolly’s intentions toward the Duttons remain questionable, another important storyline revolves around Andrea.
Played by Ash Santos, Andrea is expected to leave for Washington, D.C., after accepting a new job opportunity. Although the season ends with her farewell scene as well as a scene of her arriving at the airport, questions remain about whether she will return in the future. After all, both fans and Andrea herself want to find out the identity of the mastermind behind Thomas Rainwater’s assassination attempts. Fortunately, the show has already been greenlit for season 2. So, more answers are expected to be revealed when the next season arrives.
