Speaking to Entertainment Tonight at the September 25 premiere of his soon-to-be-released film Play Dirty, Mark Wahlberg revealed that he would never pursue an MCU role. When asked by the outlet’s interviewer if he would ever ask Robert Downey Jr., the executive producer of his film in question, for a Marvel role, Wahlberg plainly denied, saying he was not sure he had the confidence to walk out of a trailer in a superhero suit. Despite watching many MCU films, including Downey Jr.’s Iron Man, he admitted the genre is not really for him.

The conversation with Entertainment Tonight, notably, followed another revelation about Robert Downey Jr. and Mark Wahlberg. The duo, per Wahlberg, were in talks to collaborate on a project in the past based on a true story. The project, he said, is currently paused as he has another documentary in the works at his own production house. Additionally, in the ET interview, a third revelation concerning Mark Wahlberg as well as Downey Jr. emerged.
Mark Wahlberg may have beaten the Oscar-winning Oppenheimer talent himself to secure his part in Play Dirty.
Play Dirty featuring Robert Downey Jr. instead of Mark Wahlberg?
Speaking to Entertainment Tonight for Play Dirty, which drops on Prime Video on October 1, Mark Wahlberg continued revealing details about his history with Robert Downey Jr. As part of the conversation, the actor said he believed Robert Downey Jr. was attached as a performer to his film before he took on the role of the producer alongside his wife. Even amid his speculation about whether he edged out Robert Downey Jr. for a role in his kids' approved Play Dirty, however, the focus of the interview remained on what truly matters: Mark Wahlberg making stories that resonate. While he may steer clear of the Marvel universe, his passion for storytelling remains unwavering, whether through high-octane action or real-life dramas. With Play Dirty, especially, he not only shares credits with his longtime friend but also delivers a project that embraces the perfect amalgamation of family pride, professional fulfillment, and authenticity.
