Christopher Meloni portrayed Detective Elliot Stabler on Law & Order: SVU for twelve seasons before departing in 2011, establishing one of television's most iconic partnerships with Mariska Hargitay's Captain Olivia Benson. Their "Bensler" dynamic fueled fan speculation about romantic potential throughout the series' run.

Though the characters maintained a complex friendship that sometimes skewed almost-romantic. Meloni later returned for the spinoff Law & Order: Organized Crime, which was canceled in April after five seasons.

Now he will return to Law & Order: SVU for its landmark 600th episode.

Mariska Hargitay confirmed Christopher Meloni's return by sharing a behind-the-scenes photo from SVU Season 28. In the September 22 Instagram post, Hargitay pointed toward Meloni standing with his back to the camera and wrote, "Who dat?" She followed with another selfie featuring the pair and "Happy 600," confirming his appearance in the milestone episode.

The season arrives on Thursday, October 8, at 9 p.m. ET on NBC. Showrunner Michele Fazekas previously explained that she wanted to bring Stabler back more often, although Meloni's schedule limited his availability. She also stressed that his appearances should carry genuine narrative meaning rather than exist simply as fan service.

Meloni's most recent SVU appearance came at the beginning of Season 27, when Stabler encountered Benson outside the wake for their former boss, Captain Donald Cragen. During the brief reunion, Stabler told Benson that he loved her, adding another significant moment to their long-running relationship. His return comes months after Organized Crime ended its five-season run.

With Stabler officially back for the milestone episode, another unexpected Season 28 guest is preparing to enter the SVU world.

Jalen Brunson will guest star on Law and Order: SVU's upcoming 28th season, marking another crossover between the NBA star and the long-running NBC crime drama. The Knicks point guard appears in Season 28's fifth episode, with his specific role remaining under wraps.

This casting reunite Brunson with Mariska Hargitay, who previously appeared alongside him in a pretaped opening musical number where they discussed pressure and performance expectations. Brunson's SVU appearance follows his hosting duties on Saturday Night Live's Season 52 premiere on September 26 with musical guest Katseye.

The World Champion Knicks open their season on October 20 at 7 p.m. ET from Madison Square Garden against LeBron James and the Philadelphia 76ers, broadcasting on NBC and Peacock. SVU remains television's longest-running primetime drama series, chronicling the Special Victims Unit's investigations.
