Margot Robbie's 'Ocean’s Eleven' Prequel Taps Multiple-Time Oscar-Nominated Actor for Lead Role

Steven Soderbergh’s casino heist comedy, Ocean’s franchise, is getting another title to add to its universe. Originally, the Soderbergh directorial had three movies, namely Ocean’s Eleven (2001), Ocean’s Twelve (2004), and Ocean’s Thirteen (2007), all starring big names like George Clooney, Brad Pitt, and Matt Damon in lead roles. The franchise added a spin-off to its world called Ocean’s 8 starring Sandra Bullock as Debbie Ocean, Danny Ocean’s younger sister.
Now another Ocean’s movie, a prequel to be specific, is in the works, and Warner Bros. has already roped in Margot Robbie to headline the film.
At one point, Twisters director Lee Isaac Chung was locked in to helm the project, but that is not the case now. It has been reported that a multiple-time Oscar-nominated actor will now star as well as direct the film.

Who will take charge of the Ocean’s prequel?
According to Puck reporter Matthew Belloni, Bradley Cooper, who was in talks to star opposite Margot Robbie in the Ocean’s prequel, is now also in consideration to write and direct the film. The reports of him being in the race for the lead first came in October, 2025. At that time, Lee Isaac Chung was supposed to direct the prequel and had also met with Cooper about the project.
"Fun news: Bradley Cooper is now the choice to write and direct the Ocean's 11 prequel for WB. (Lee Isaac Chung recently dropped out.) Cooper would also star with Margot Robbie. No deals yet, but the goal is to shoot this year," read Belloni's post on X. However, this report is not yet confirmed by any official updates either from the studios or from the actor himself.
Cooper has a fairly good deal of directing experience and his resume boasts the Oscars-nominated movies like A Star is Born (2018) and Maestro (2023). His most recent directorial venture was Is This Thing On? (2025).
The prequel, which is still in development, has sparked curiosity about the plot of the movie and what the lead pair might be going after this time.
The story of the upcoming Ocean’s prequel
The exact details of the plot are still under wraps, but according to a report from Variety, the story of the prequel is anticipated to take place prior to the events in George Clooney, Brad Pitt, Julia Roberts, and Matt Damon's 2001 movie. The screenplay, written by Carrie Solomon, is supposedly set in 1960s Europe.

Interestingly, Steven Soderbergh’s Ocean’s Eleven was based on a 1960 movie of the same name, starring Frank Sinatra, Sammy Davis Jr., Joey Bishop, Peter Lawford, and Dean Martin in lead roles. Since the new movie is also allegedly set in the same era, it will be interesting to see if Bradley Cooper’s role in Ocean’s Eleven prequel finds some similarities with the original one.
