Prime Video has recruited Mandy Patinkin to bring Odin to life, who exhibits intense paranoia in the God of War series, per Deadline. Patinkin, who gained recognition through his work on The Princess Bride and Homeland, will portray an entirely new version of Odin the All-Father in Prime Video's upcoming adaptation of PlayStation’s wildly popular ancient mythology-based video game.
A rather ungodlike character, Odin here is not physically imposing but remains the strongest among all Aesir gods, leading with absolute authority while in pursuit of unlimited knowledge. Patinkin's Odin is touted to be manipulative and therefore, unmistakably dangerous as he could conquer any length for his obsessive need to prevent Ragnarök, i.e., the Norse apocalypse.
Empowered by Patinkin's 50-year-old extensive filmography and background in theatre, film, and television, makes him an ideal candidate to play the formidable antagonist to Kratos. Cinephiles might know the Golden Globe nominated and Tony Award-winning Broadway actor from Chicago Hope, Dead Like Me, Criminal Minds, Death and Other Details, etc. Most recently, he starred in Wonder, The Artist, Brilliant Minds, The American Revolution (TV series), and more.
The God of War video game features Odin and his God of Thunder son as an opponent to Kratos and his son, Atreus. Odin uses his tactical skills and psychological warfare to manipulate events and test the hero's progress, though much about the scale of Patinkin's role is not yet revealed. However, the decision to cast Patinkin shows that the production team seeks to prioritize depth in storytelling, as casting announcements continue in full swing.
Much like Patinkin, several key characters in Prime Video's upcoming adaptation has already found their hosts.
Confirmed cast of the God of War series
Amazon has reportedly already ordered two seasons of God of War; however, according to showrunner Ronald D. Moore's statements from the San Diego Comic-Con 2025, fans might have to wait a while. But the better news is, Prime Video has been finalizing the cast of the series, gluing everyone's jaw to the floor.
Max Parker plays Heimdall, Odin’s son and vigilant Watchman of Asgard, and Severance star Ólafur Darri Ólafsson stars as Thor, God of Thunder. Meanwhile, Teresa Palmer has been cast as Sif, and Ryan Hurst as Kratos.

The series adapts the highly successful PlayStation video game series to depict the father-son conflict between Kratos and Atreus, who must balance their godly and human identities while traveling through different realms to fight against their enemies. The adaptation will reproduce emotional aspects and mythological elements from the games through the combined efforts of showrunner Ronald D. Moore and director Frederick E.O. Toye, who will create intense character conflicts together with sweeping Norse mythology elements.
