Comedy looks like pure joy from the outside: punchlines landing, audiences roaring, comedians collecting standing ovations like trophies. Behind the curtain, it can become a bloodsport where every joke is sharpened and every peer becomes another reminder to keep producing.
The pressure to write, perform, and remain relevant can follow performers long after they have conquered arenas and awards shows. Chris Rock knows that machinery intimately. Years of therapy have helped him confront the insecurities underneath the applause.
Yet certain friends can still trigger them instantly.
Chris Rock says Sandler and Rubin can make him feel insecure
During an October 3 appearance on The New York Times’ The Interview, Chris Rock explained that much of his post-COVID therapy has centered on insecurity and learning to accept that he is already “enough.” His anxiety is not rooted primarily in celebrity status. It tends to surface when he sees people around him operating at a furious creative pace.
“Occasionally, I’ll meet people that are obviously working harder than me and that’ll make me feel insecure. You know, Adam Sandler, Rick Rubin.”

The feeling goes beyond professional output. Rock also admitted that watching people who appear deeply engaged with their children can prompt similar self-questioning, even though he considers himself a good father. The comedian shares daughters Lola and Zahra with former wife Malaak Compton-Rock. Later in the same conversation, Rock described artists as people capable of carrying enormous confidence and an inferiority complex at the same time.
That tension sits remarkably close to the world of his new film. Rock has spent 12 years away from feature directing since Top Five, a period that included divorce, the pandemic, stand-up work, and years of personal reassessment. His return places insecurity, status, ambition, and the terror of falling behind directly under Hollywood’s bright lights.
And Rock has now turned those anxieties into the kind of movie he spent more than a decade away from making.
Misty Green brings Rock back behind the camera
Misty Green marks Chris Rock’s first feature as director since Top Five. Rosalind Eleazar stars as an Emmy-winning actress whose career has stalled, leaving her scrambling for work while facing eviction from her late ex-boyfriend’s home and supporting a brother dealing with mental illness. Rock wrote and directed the film and also appears alongside Adam Driver, Anna Kendrick, Topher Grace, and Daniel Kaluuya.

Kaluuya required some convincing. Rock told Variety that the actor had stepped away from major screen work and was the one cast member he actively had to pursue. Eleazar’s involvement eventually helped draw him toward the project. Rock also credited Sandler’s dramatic work in films such as Uncut Gems as inspiration while shaping his own return to drama.
The film premiered at Toronto before screening as part of the New York Film Festival’s Main Slate. A24 is handling its release, with the studio currently listing the theatrical date as 2026. For Rock, the funny part may be that one of the friends who makes him question his productivity also helped inspire the movie bringing him back.
