Fame often comes with intense scrutiny and criticism, and this is not unknown to Maitreyi Ramakrishnan, who was catapulted to success with her role as Devi in the Netflix coming-of-age series Never Have I Ever. While many viewers loved her character and praised the show’s representation, others also applauded her performance. While dealing with negativity is never easy, Ramakrishnan revealed how Mindy Kaling helped her shift her mindset and approach such conversations from a different perspective.

Maitreyi Ramakrishnan, who recently joined Dinner’s On Me with Jesse Tyler Ferguson for a conversation, opened up about the criticism she received early in her career. She revealed that what hurt her the most was the criticism coming from her own community. The actress explained that she felt this way because she believed it was her responsibility to represent the entire South Asian community. However, a few words of wisdom from Mindy Kaling changed her mindset and approach to the criticism.
"And Mindy was the one who really helped me understand that your community will be your biggest supporters and the loudest supporters, but they also can be some of the loudest critics, and that s**** because you're like, I'm doing this for you," she said.

During the conversation, Ramakrishnan added that she initially focused on negative comments much more than the positive ones. However, she eventually learned that while some people would connect with her representation and appreciate it, others might not. However, Ramakrishnan also made it clear that hurtful comments are not acceptable.
Now, the actress is set to play yet another layered character on screen in her new film, Best of the Best. And this time, her character has to deal with new challenges that are different from those of her previous character, Devi.

Maitreyi Ramakrishnan is all set to star in the new film Best of the Best. For her role in the movie, the actress had to undergo an intensive dance boot camp. She opened up about how much she enjoyed dancing, but admitted that the boot camp was also a humbling experience.
“I was an overconfident dancer and could pick up choreography very fast, but in the beginning, my body physically could not keep up,” she told Vogue India.
“I was frustrated that my mental readiness and my strength were not in sync, and I had to give myself grace. Now, I truly have never felt more confident in my body," she further added.

The new movie Best of the Best follows two best friends who are suddenly thrown into a cutthroat Bollywood-fusion dance team competition. Ramakrishnan plays Maya, while Priyanka Kedia stars as Anjali in the mov. With Prashanth Venkataramanujam and Hasan Minhaj behind the project, the film is clearly a promising comedy-dance flick on Netflix.
