A fan page on X recently shared a post praising the recent achievements in stop-motion animation and how bright the future looks for the filmmaking technique. In response, Guillermo del Toro assured fans that his team is also working hard on the stop motion adaptation of Buried Giant while sharing a hopeful update for the movie. He further went on to praise the artistry behind stop-motion filmmaking.
“We have a lot of experimentation ahead. But this entire community never gives up- never abandons its faith: Made by humans for humans. Whomever joins this adventure is doing the animation Gods' work,” he wrote on X.
Despite the hard work required by the animation style, del Toro chose to make the film in stop-motion to stay true to the story. His previous film, the 2022 adaptation of Pinocchio, was also made using the same animation technique. During an appearance at a career talk at the BFI Southbank in London, he further opened up about his decision.
“I want all the creatures to be of the same material. It’s gonna take us years. And it’s incredibly difficult," he said.
The director’s latest comment also shows his deep admiration for artistry and craftsmanship which explains his distaste for AI.

In several interviews, he spoke about the importance of art in the current generation. During the 17th edition of the Lumière Film Festival, as reported by Euronews, the Oscar winner once again defended human-made art. Del Toro had earlier made a similar comment about Frankenstein, saying it was made “by humans for humans.” While the debate around AI versus human-made work will continue, there is no denying that what Del Toro creates feels unique and irreplaceable.
