The last and ninth episode of Love Story is set during the final weekend of John F. Kennedy Jr. and Carolyn Bessette’s lives. Despite their differences and heated fights, the couple struggles to save their relationship and decides to see a marriage counselor. Following the advice to spend some time apart, they finally reconnect and even recreate their first date at an Indian restaurant.

Just as they seem to have drawn closer and resolved some of their issues, July 16, 1999, is shown in the episode. They are seen getting prepared for the Kennedy family wedding in Martha’s Vineyard, accompanied by Carolyn’s sister, Lauren Bessette. Although Carolyn initially hesitates to attend the wedding, she chooses to go to be with John.

In their final moments on the plane, Kennedy Jr. fears the worsening weather. As Carolyn senses his anxiety and asks to sit beside him, he silently confronts an unchangeable reality. With Lauren seated calmly behind them, the camera shows the flashing red engine failure warning before the screen goes black.

The next scene shows the aftermath, showing the family grappling with the devastating news. Carolyn’s mother mourns the loss of her daughters, while Caroline faces the death of her brother after losing so many family members, including her parents. As Hines hinted, the series was not just a retelling of their story, but it was also a heartfelt tribute to the people.
