Lindsay Lohan is returning to Netflix for a new romance, this time starring opposite Henry Golding in Return to You. The project reunites her with Freaky Friday and Mean Girls director Mark Waters. It also gives Lohan another chance to expand the comeback era that has taken her from Y2K icon to a new chapter in her career.

Now, after years away from the Hollywood spotlight, Lohan has been steadily rebuilding her filmography on her own terms.

The new project has a particularly nostalgic outlook because Lindsay Lohan is not simply returning to Netflix. She is reuniting with Mark Waters, the filmmaker behind two of the roles that helped define her early career. Mean Girls gave Lohan one of her most enduring pop culture characters, while Freaky Friday turned her chemistry with Jamie Lee Curtis into one of the era’s most beloved mother-daughter comedy pairings.

According to an exclusive report from Deadline, Lohan will star in and produce Return to You, with Henry Golding joining her as the male lead. Waters is directing from a screenplay by Eric Champnella, while Brad Krevoy, who previously worked with Lohan on Falling for Christmas and Irish Wish, is producing. The story is set in 2008 and follows a lonely attorney who accidentally receives an emotional DVD intended for Golding’s character by a dying woman, sending her on a search to find him.

After returning to the screen through Netflix’s string of romantic comedies, she is now entering another phase of the Lohanaissance, one that is expanding beyond the cozy rom-com formula.

Lindsay Lohan’s Netflix run has already become its own little corner of the streaming ecosystem. She returned to leading film roles with Falling for Christmas in 2022, followed it with Irish Wish in 2024, and then starred in Our Little Secret later that year. Netflix itself described Falling for Christmas as her return to the romantic comedy genre, while Irish Wish continued her creative partnership with producer Brad Krevoy.

That comeback has also started stretching beyond holiday rom-com territory. Lohan recently returned as Anna Coleman in Freakier Friday, bringing the Disney nostalgia machine full circle, while her upcoming Hulu series Count My Lies puts her in a darker setting as Violet Lockhart opposite Shailene Woodley and Kit Harington. The series marks her first starring role in a scripted television series.

For Return to You, though, Lohan is once again leaning into the romantic genre that has become an important part of her second-act filmography, with a director who knows exactly what she can do with a perfectly timed reaction shot.
