Lilly Wachowski does not wish to return to making Matrix movies, but has some insights on the franchise’s future. Quietly developing behind closed doors for the past two years, one of cinema's most influential sci-fi franchises has just received a major sign of life. Hidden within a massive, wide-ranging slate reveal that spans everything from a live-action Jetsons adaptation to anticipated superhero sequels, Warner Bros. has officially confirmed that its long-awaited Matrix revival remains firmly on track.

And now, Lilly Wachowski has brought more attention to this quiet Matrix development by Warner Bros.

Although Lilly Wachowski does not wish to resume producing Matrix movies, she must decide whether to approve of Drew Goddard's suggested continuation. Wachowski recently talked to Kim Masters about the project on The Business on KCRW on September 4. She says in the interview that Goddard is hesitant to move further without her and her sister Lana's consent and that they might only glance at what he is doing before making a decision.

Compared to either supporting or participating in the movie, that is a more tentative stance. The prospect of viewing Goddard's work does not equate to an announced production role, and Wachowski shows no inclination to take over the project. The blessing itself remains unresolved in her account.

The next movie will be written and directed by Goddard. Attached as an executive producer is Lana Wachowski. Lilly's recent comments on The Business on KCRW do not prove that she has accepted the same credit as Lana or any credit at all; rather, they are a personal and creative response to someone else carrying on the series.

While Drew Goddard remains passionate about The Matrix 5, there is not much to go on about the project currently.

The Matrix 5 still at a very nascent stage

Drew Goddard was still working on the screenplay and has not revealed the plot in his March 2026 update. In that update, the return of cast members was not officially confirmed. Lilly Wachowski's remarks do not include a casting announcement. Rather than who might appear in the project, they are concerned with whether the creators support it.

Consultation can be important for a Wachowski franchise without putting its creators back in front of the camera. Goddard's alleged desire preserves his own authorship while acknowledging their relationship to the content. Lilly Wachowski's option is not whether she wants to create another Matrix herself, but rather whether to accept that subsequent interpretation after Warner Bros. gained full control of The Matrix Resurrections. Her response is much clearer on the latter point.
