Lewis Hamilton recalls 2008 Italian Grand Prix
The 2008 Italian Grand Prix at Monza is widely considered one of the most iconic, barrier-breaking races in modern Formula 1 history. It was the weekend Sebastian Vettel shocked the motorsport world by securing his maiden F1 victory. The entire race weekend was plagued by torrential, heavy rain.
The wet track caught out top championship contenders like Lewis Hamilton and Kimi Räikkönen during qualifying. Because of the dangerous amount of standing water on the track, the race was forced to start behind the Safety Car. Once the racing went green, Vettel delivered a masterclass in wet-weather driving.

Hamilton later recalled how Vettel had “blitzed” him in the heavy rain. Vettel led 49 of the 53 laps, showing impressive composure as the track gradually dried. He crossed the finish line 12.5 seconds ahead of Heikki Kovalainen, while BMW Sauber’s Robert Kubica finished third. The win made Vettel the youngest race winner in F1 history at the time.
