Matthew McConaughey revealed that his son Levi McConaughey insisted on auditioning for the survival drama The Lost Bus, but only after proving his talent anonymously. This determination eventually landed the teenager a key role in the intense real-life disaster story. As it turns out, earning a breakout Hollywood film role requires removing one of the most famous last names in cinema.

During a conversation with Drew Barrymore on The Drew Barrymore Show, Matthew McConaughey explained that his son, Levi McConaughey, repeatedly asked to audition for The Lost Bus. To ensure completely objective feedback, he deliberately removed his famous last name before sending the audition tape to director Paul Greengrass. Greengrass watched the clip, immediately approved the performance, and selected Levi for the role before ever learning his true identity.

“But we pull his last name, send it to Paul (Paul Greengrass). He looks at it he goes, ‘That's the kid.’ She (Francine Maisler) goes, ‘Well, that's actually Matthew's son.’ He goes, ‘Even better,’ Matthew McConaughey recalled. The Oscar winner made his son work hard for the opportunity, taping him only after having him as for a reading almost four times. 

After recording two strong takes at home, McConaughey forwarded the footage to renowned casting director Francine Maisler, who later reviewed by Greengrass. Removing the famous moniker proved that the teenager's acting skill alone earned him the coveted role in The Lost Bus, as Matthew McConaughey said on The Drew Barrymore Show.
