It was a plot twist of the century to see Robert Downey Jr.’s face emerge behind Doctor Doom’s mask at the San Diego Comic-Con Hall H panel on July 27, 2024. No one could have guessed before that moment that RDJ would come back to Marvel after such an epic sendoff in Avengers: Endgame, and that too as a villain. The generational flip really set the momentum for Avengers: Doomsday, and now the former Iron Man actor has taken it up a few notches.

He recently revealed the real reason that compelled him to trade his iconic Iron Man suit and the mantle of the King of Latveria.

Robert Downey Jr. is gearing up for his MCU return in Avengers: Doomsday, this time stepping into a brand-new role as Victor Von Doom. During an appearance on the Countdown to Avengers: Doomsday Official Podcast, hosted as part of an Avengers: Endgame special, the actor opened up to Ms. Marvel star Iman Vellani about his ambitious reasons for taking on the iconic villain.

"What brought me back was the opportunity to redefine the genre of superhero movies," he said about his decision to return.

“We love a challenge and we figured, ‘Wow, let’s mix it up and see if we can get ourselves excited.’ Because if we’re excited, the audience will soon follow,” he added, talking specifically about Kevin Feige and himself. 

Although recent releases like Spider-Man: Brand New Day found success, RDJ rightfully acknowledges in the Countdown to Avengers: Doomsday Official Podcast the widespread superhero fatigue that has gripped audiences following a string of underperforming Marvel films leading up to Doomsday.

Fortunately, Doomsday is already defying those trends, breaking pre-sale records ahead of its theatrical debut. With Marvel chief Kevin Feige shifting strategy by reducing the number of projects rolling out between Doomsday and Avengers: Secret Wars, expectations are high that the blockbuster will serve as a much-needed turning point for the cinematic universe.

To accomplish this, Marvel is pulling all the stops, which includes their massive effort to re-release Avengers: Endgame.

Stepping into the role of iconic villain Doctor Doom, Robert Downey Jr. is set to deliver what is widely anticipated to be the most formidable and complex adversary the Avengers have ever faced. To build anticipation for his villainous debut, Marvel has strategically tied brand-new promotional teases and exclusive footage for the upcoming crossover into the current global theatrical rerelease of Avengers: Endgame Encore. 

This cinematic event gives fans around the world a chance to experience the culmination of the Infinity Saga back on the big screen while catching the very first glimpse of how Downey's revolutionary antagonist will reshape the future of the franchise. The new extended version of Endgame will land in theaters on September 25, 2026.
