The Boys on Amazon has evolved into a cultural phenomenon over the course of seven years, something that provides the internet with many discourses with each season. Among those is a recurring discussion over Laz Alonso, who plays Mother’s Milk or M.M. in the series, whose drastic weight loss after season 3 baffled viewers and led to some assumptions regarding his health. From concerns to mockery, the internet had all kinds of reactions to the transformation, but what was missing was Alonso’s perspective.

But it came post-season 4, where Laz Alonso explained why he shed so much weight after the particular season.

As soon as the first look at The Boys season 4 hit online, there were raging questions over Mother's Milk's dramatic slimmer look in the show. For the first three seasons of the series, Alonso maintained the buffed look of M.M. from the comics. But the sudden shift in season 4 threw everyone off. Addressing the same, Alonso gave an explanation of his weight loss decision in an interview with Men's Health in 2024, stating that it was for the character's sake as much as his own.

"I was heavy on caloric surplus when I first started the show. Seasons 1 and 2, I wanted to look like the comic. Season 3, we shot during and after COVID, and I went from looking like the comic to looking like a very inflated version of the comic," the actor said in the interview.

He went on to explain how a poor diet led him to put on an extra 40lbs. He said that he was so shocked to see his own face in the promotional posters of season 3 that he had to ask Amazon if they digitally added weight to his character. But that was not the case, and Alonso, who had not yet noticed it, found out that he was actually pushing 250lbs and it was not healthy.

"It wasn't healthy. Before season 4 came around, I wanted to do something real different," Alonso said about his desire to change things moving forward.

And he got his excuse when Eric Kripke told him about the next chapter of M.M’s journey in season 4 to involve a huge transformation, and with his OCD habits, it was the perfect chance for him to show that big change visibly too. He went on an extreme calorie reduction and shaved to better represent his character back in “his regimented, military way of running things.”

Despite Alonso’s weight loss not being as alarming, many compared his situation with that of the late Chadwick Boseman, who went through a similar transformation before his death.

Laz Alonso’s transformation started a Chadwick Boseman scare

At the time when the late Black Panther star Chadwick Boseman was still secretly battling with cancer, the internet dubbed him "crack panther" when he was noticed appearing leaner than normal. But it was not until his death that they came to know about the real reason behind it. But the same thing is now happening with Laz Alonso.

Fans were worried about Alonso's health since they thought his shift was similar to Chadwick Boseman's noticeable physical alteration. In contrast to Boseman, Alonso's weight loss throughout seasons three and four of The Boys was not due to illness. Rather, it was due to a realization of the current faulty lifestyle choices and a desire to break out of it.
