Lauren Cohan just shared her thoughts on the horrifying idea of a possible Maggie-Negan romantic angle. Throughout The Walking Dead series, Maggie (Lauren Cohan) and Negan (Jeffrey Dean Morgan) have been like fire and water; they could not exist together. However, The Walking Dead: Dead City changed that forever by forcing them to work closely with each other. While still retaining the grudges, the eternal flame of enmity, and the never-ceasing banter, they came to a mutual understanding of sorts. 

However, season 3, episode 6 of the show brought the two characters dangerously close, and Lauren Cohan has now given her thoughts on the idea of a possible Maggie-Negan romance. 

In addition to airing the first parallel reality episode in the franchise, The Walking Dead: Dead City also presented a different kind of fear: the fear of a potential romance between Maggie and Negan. Season 3, episode 6, titled Genesis, which aired on Sunday night, whisks the audience and characters away from the post-apocalyptic reality to a scenario where the zombie apocalypse never occurred.

But it did more than give a normal interaction free from the zombie interruption between the characters; it gave an almost romantic encounter between Maggie and Negan, which was bizarre for the viewers who have been following the lore since the original series. Interestingly, Cohan echoed the same sentiment with her response on the Maggie-Negan hookup idea in an interview with Entertainment Weekly.

“That was Seth’s joke,” Cohan tells the outlet of showrunner Seth Hoffman. 

“It’s like we have to make every episode horrifying, and the horror of this one is, ‘Are Maggie and Megan gonna... [makes barfing noise],’” she added.

Elaborating further on her comments to the Entertainment Weekly, Cohan noted that the narrative intentionally toyed with audience dread, letting viewers worry about a potential hookup before ultimately offering relief. Once past that initial shock, she explained, the experience shifts into exploring just how surreal and strange it feels to see these characters interact under such bizarre circumstances.

The history between both the characters creates a barrier beyond which this idea of a potential romance seems jarring.

The relationship between Maggie Greene and Negan is one of the most toxic, complex, and emotionally charged dynamics in The Walking Dead universe. Their paths crossed permanently in the flagship series when Negan, leader of the Saviors, brutally m******* Maggie’s husband, Glenn Rhee, right in front of her. Maggie’s entire existence regarding Negan was fueled by a consuming desire for revenge. 

When the story shifted to The Walking Dead: Dead City, the two were forced into an uneasy partnership in a ruined, post-apocalyptic Manhattan to rescue Maggie’s kidnapped son, Hershel. Despite moments of vulnerability and mutual understanding, their relationship remains heavily fractured by the unerasable horrors of their past. That is why even a glimmer of romance in their twisted relationship seems like an out-of-place concept. However, this little detour has also increased the curiosity around the remaining episodes.
