The first two episodes of Lanterns established a murder mystery in Rushville, Nebraska, as Hal Jordan and John Stewart investigated a strange extraterrestrial presence while uncovering the threat posed by the Manhunters. Episode 3 stepped away from the investigation to explore John’s childhood, Marine career, art school years and eventual selection by the Guardians to become Hal’s successor.

Episode 4, The Weenie brings the central mystery back into focus as Hal confronts Sinestro, John grows closer to Zoe, and the search for the Manhunter takes a stunning turn.

Episode 4 opens the door to the information Sinestro has been holding over Hal. The former mentor tells him that the Manhunter cannot perfectly reproduce a human heart, giving Hal a specific way to identify the shape-shifting threat. Sinestro also pushes Hal toward viewing John as a problem, since the Guardians have positioned the younger Lantern as his eventual replacement. Their search eventually leads to a slaughterhouse operated by a man calling himself Hector Hammond. The name immediately carries significance for DC fans because Hector Hammond is a familiar Green Lantern villain. In this story, however, the identity proves deliberately misleading.

Inside the facility, Hal and John encounter bizarre technology, robotic workers and a system that breaks down livestock with frightening precision. The episode uses the surreal setting to maintain the mystery before bringing the two Lanterns face to face with “Hammond.” He threatens John’s family and plays a recording of John speaking with the Guardian, giving Hal another reason to believe that John has been keeping information from him.

She discovered the truth after reading the Episode 4 script and described herself as shocked by the reveal. The actress also explained that the discovery changed how she viewed Zoe’s earlier behavior, including her encounter with John in the premiere.

Jagannathan described Zoe as a character shaped by programming and forced into a dangerous existence. Her relationship with John therefore carries another layer of meaning. The intimacy between them began as part of Zoe’s strategy, yet her feelings appear to develop into something genuine.
