Kristen Stewart Says Trump-Era Politics Are Pushing Her to Make Movies Outside the US
It is a truth universally acknowledged that Donald Trump has invested more time and energy critiquing Kristen Stewart during her Twilight days than any other nation's President. Her recent directorial debut, The Chronology of Water, has once again stirred fresh conversation about political influences on art, sabotaged by Trump's recent political ploys.
Stewart has now openly called out the political climate in the US, where President Donald Trump essentially restricts artistic possibilities. Stewart’s remarks emphasize that Hollywood artists currently face challenges because political matters and industry limitations obstruct their creative work.

Kristen Stewart said her debut film, The Chronology of Water, was shot in Latvia because it would have been impossible to make in the US under current political conditions, deeming the situation terrifying for the film industry. She described the reality-breaking political administration under Donald Trump as one with no freedom.
“It would have been impossible [to make The Chronology of Water] in the States... Reality is breaking completely under Trump. But we should take a page out of his book and create the reality we want to live in," the actress-cum-filmmaker lamented while speaking with The Times UK.
Stewart's critique of Trump’s administration references concerns like suggested tariffs on films made outside the US that could disastrously reshape global production economics. For the unversed, Trump proposed 100% tariff on foreign films.
However, the Underwater actress, who has always been vocal about politics, seems to have already decided what to do next. And moving out of America, like fellow director James Cameron, who now resides in New Zealand, might be her solution, per her recent profile interview with the outlet.

What does the future of filmmaking hold for Kristen Stewart?
Though Kristen Stewart does not want to completely abandon America, she said she is drawn to making films in Europe and then bringing them back to the country as a bold metaphor for bringing international, artist-driven work to US audiences despite political turmoil.
"I can’t work freely [in the US], but I don’t want to give up completely. I’d like to make movies in Europe and then shove them down the throat of the American people," the Still Alice actress and rookie director said to the outlet.

The actress's willingness to work abroad follows a broader set of critiques she has voiced about the film industry’s structural issues. She has previously described the industry as a capitalist hell that stifles independent expression and diversity, calling for systemic change so artists can tell stories that are not constrained by commercial convention.
By choosing to make more award-winning films like The Chronology of Water outside Hollywood’s traditional system, Kristen Stewart has embraced a globally and socio-economically liberal filmmaking landscape, where art does not get caged by politics.
