Kristen Stewart and Olivier Assayas clearly have unfinished business with the supernatural. A decade after Personal Shopper turned their creative partnership toward ghosts, grief and the murky space between the two, the actor and filmmaker are heading back into stranger territory with Spiritual World. 

Stewart is returning to Assayas’ orbit, but this time the unexplained comes with a clairvoyant protagonist at its center.

As per Ion Cinema, Kristen Stewart will play Ada, a young woman with clairvoyant powers who experiences mysterious premonitions in Spiritual World. It gives the actor another role that sits comfortably in the uneasy space between psychological drama and the supernatural, a territory she and Assayas have already navigated together.

The reunion comes after Clouds of Sils Maria and Personal Shopper, the latter becoming the more obvious reference point for what Spiritual World could have in store. Released in 2016, Personal Shopper cast Stewart as Maureen, an American living in Paris who works as a personal shopper while attempting to contact her recently deceased twin brother. 

Clouds of Sils Maria, meanwhile, was their first collaboration in 2014, with Stewart playing Valentine, the assistant to an actress wrestling with a demanding stage production. Her performance earned her the César Award for Best Supporting Actress, making her the first American actress to win the prize.

With Spiritual World, as confirmed by Ion Cinema, Assayas is bringing Stewart back for a character whose connection to the unseen is considerably more direct.

The new film keeps its cards close, but its international ensemble suggests Ada’s visions will lead into considerably larger territory.

Vicky Krieps, Niels Schneider, Riley Keough, Wagner Moura, who was last seen on Netflix's top viewership charts, and Barbara Sukowa join Kristen Stewart for Spiritual World. The film is being produced by Curiosa Films and ARTE France, with production scheduled to take place in France and Germany between February and April.

Plot details remain deliberately sparse beyond Ada’s clairvoyant abilities and the premonitions surrounding her. That leaves plenty of room for Assayas to play with the kind of ambiguity that has become one of his signatures.

The supernatural premise also puts Personal Shopper inescapably in the rear-view mirror. But Spiritual World is not simply a reunion designed to recreate that film’s formula. Stewart is returning to Assayas with a new character and a new mystery, while the filmmaker once again appears interested in what happens when the inexplicable refuses to stay at the edges of ordinary life.
