Game of Thrones star Kit Harington will play Gilderoy Lockhart in Season 2 of HBO's Harry Potter series. The celebrated fantasy hero steps into the shoes of a famously narcissistic, fraudulent wizard.  Harington proved his versatility for high-profile fantasy and comedic roles through major feature films like Eternals, Seventh Son, Pompeii, and the How to Train Your Dragon franchise. As reported by Deadline, Game of Thrones star Kit Harington is joining another tentpole fantasy series for HBO as Gilderoy Lockhart in Season 2 of Harry Potter. Harington replaces Nicholas Hoult, who was originally cast in the role but left due to scheduling issues. Harington previously voiced Lockhart in the Audible storefront featurette & sample: Harry Potter and the Chamber of Secrets (Full-Cast Edition) and recalled reading the books.

“I read it, and like so many generations, I was entranced, and then I was a huge fan all through my teenage years,” he said. Lockhart serves as a central character in Harry Potter and the Chamber of Secrets, previously portrayed by Kenneth Branagh on film. He operates as a boastful, fame-obsessed wizard recruited by Dumbledore to teach Defense Against the Dark Arts.

“I think there’s a little bit of Gilderoy Lockhart in all of us,” Harington said. He never performed the brave deeds written in his books, instead tracking down competent wizards to wipe their memories after stealing their achievements.
