John Cusack has revealed that Quentin Tarantino pitched him the entire story of Pulp Fiction over a meal at Denny's. The chat came during a sweeping career interview where Cusack skipped from teen romances to Brian Wilson. Somewhere between those stops, a certain diner table made a surprise cameo. Tarantino, a man who treats storytelling as a full-contact sport, apparently did not even need a soundstage to perform it.

While most pitch meetings happen in polished offices, this one unfolded at a Denny's and ended with a role that went to someone else.

Quentin Tarantino acted out the whole story of what became Pulp Fiction for John Cusack at a Denny's. There was no boardroom, no slideshow, and no script on the table, only a booth and a very animated storyteller. 

"I do remember meeting with him about that movie, and you know, we went to a Denny's," Cusack recalled on the Happy Sad Confused podcast, 

He added that the talk then turned to a new TV and screening room, where "he was like kind of geeking out on that stuff and so I thought he was I thought he was it was cool story."

Host Josh Horowitz opened the topic on the Happy Sad Confused podcast by noting that Tarantino supposedly had Cusack as the top choice for the role Eric Stoltz eventually played. Cusack described the sit-down as a good story but said the part never reached him as an offer, nor did he turn it down. Horowitz joked that Tarantino still has the number saved somewhere in his phone, waiting for a callback.

While Cusack waits on a callback that never came, Tarantino is busy handing another character a whole novel to live in.

Quentin Tarantino will publish The Adventures of Cliff Booth through HarperCollins on December 8, 2026, marking his third book. The novel follows Cliff Booth, the stuntman played by Brad Pitt on screen, and arrives far quicker than the 2021 novelization of Once Upon a Time in Hollywood, which trailed its film by two years. Readers will not need to wait long, since the book lands before the year runs out.

The film sequel, The Further Mis-Adventures of Cliff Booth, shares the novel's 1977 timeline. Tarantino wrote the script but handed the directing duties to David Fincher, with IMAX theaters getting the film on November 25, 2026, and Netflix following on December 23. That places the book on shelves just 13 days after the theatrical debut. John Cusack got a Denny's pitch and no offer, while Cliff Booth got a movie and a novel.
