There can never really be enough theories, leaks, casting chatter, and multiverse math surrounding Avengers: Secret Wars. After years of speculation, Marvel has already turned the road to the film into one enormous crossover question mark. With Avengers: Doomsday arriving first and Robert Downey Jr. now positioned as Doctor Doom, the stakes have only become more deliciously unpredictable.

And now Kevin Feige has added a particularly tantalizing piece to the puzzle.

The latest tease comes from an unusually meta corner of Marvel history. Marvel recently republished Jonathan Hickman and Esad Ribić’s acclaimed 2015 Secret Wars as part of its Premier Collection, complete with a new foreword from Marvel Studios president Kevin Feige. As reported by The Direct, Feige used that foreword to look beyond the comic itself and tease what the MCU could eventually do with its adaptation. 

"We will bring together the characters we know and love in pinch-me moments that we as fans have always dreamed of but have never seen realized. And we will call on Doctor Doom, the greatest villain in the history of the Marvel universe, to become a centerpiece of that story,” he said. 

The nine-issue saga remains one of the defining modern Marvel events, built around collapsing realities, incursions, Battleworld, and Doctor Doom’s attempt to reshape existence itself. As per The Direct, he also positioned Doctor Doom as a centerpiece, calling him the greatest villain in Marvel history.

The comic itself provides another intriguing clue. Feige described Hickman’s story as leaving behind a Marvel Multiverse that was effectively rebuilt and retooled for a new era, allowing the franchise to branch into “all-new, all-different directions.” That makes the 2015 storyline particularly relevant to the MCU, which is heading toward its own major continuity reckoning.

If the comics are the blueprint, then Battleworld is Marvel’s ultimate junk drawer: broken realities, alternate versions, old favorites, new heroes, and enough continuity chaos to make a TVA bureaucrat reach for a stress ball.

The idea of going bigger than Avengers: Endgame is hardly new. When Jonathan Majors’ Kang was still positioned as the Multiverse Saga’s overarching villain, rumors suggested Marvel wanted a massive multiversal equivalent of the Endgame portals sequence, gathering recognizable heroes from different corners of Marvel history for one final stand. The architecture has changed dramatically since then, with Doctor Doom replacing Kang as the central threat.

That ambition is already visible in Doomsday. Disney describes the film as bringing heroes from three distinct universes into collision, while its announced ensemble includes Avengers, Fantastic Four and legacy X-Men figures. Robert Downey Jr. returning to Marvel as Doom only makes the eventual payoff stranger, especially given how much emotional baggage comes attached to his previous MCU identity.

For now, Marvel is keeping the lid firmly on the Battleworld box. But if Kevin Feige’s language is intentional, Secret Wars may not simply conclude the Multiverse Saga. It could become the MCU’s ultimate collision between memory, mythology, and the characters fans have spent decades imagining together.
