In the world of blockbuster filmmaking, collaborations often span years, with actors, directors, and producers crossing paths repeatedly across projects. But sometimes, a single moment in hindsight becomes far more meaningful than anyone could have anticipated at the time. For those who worked closely with the late Chadwick Boseman, memories of the actor carry both admiration and emotional weight. Among them is Kevin Feige, the president of Marvel Studios, who recently opened up about the final time he saw the actor in person and how that moment continues to stay with him.

During a recent panel discussion, Kevin Feige shared a deeply personal recollection that changed how he thinks about time, collaboration, and the assumption that there will always be another chance to reconnect.

While speaking at the dedication event for the Kevin Feige Division of Film & Television Production at the University of Southern California’s USC School of Cinematic Arts, Kevin Feige reflected on the last time he met Chadwick Boseman. The panel featured fellow USC alumni, including director Ryan Coogler, who helmed the Black Panther films, and Shawn Levy, director of Deadpool & Wolverine. During the discussion, Feige spoke candidly about the unexpected emotional impact of realizing that his final meeting with Boseman had already happened.

“We will be back in there, that was always my expectation,” Kevin Feige said. “So the need to set a dinner or a lunch to say hi, I just never do. Because we’re busy and because we’re going to have a next time. And that hit me like a ton of bricks when I realized that there wasn’t going to be a next time.” The remark captured how the fast-paced nature of the film industry often leaves little room to pause, until hindsight reveals how precious those moments truly were.

Feige also shared that his last interaction with Boseman took place while the actor was recording voice work for the animated Marvel series What If...?. In the series, Boseman voiced an alternate version of T’Challa, giving the character a fresh twist compared to the heroic king audiences knew from the Black Panther films. According to Feige, the actor appeared genuinely excited about the experience and enjoyed exploring a more playful interpretation of the beloved character.

Feige noted that Boseman spoke enthusiastically about the project and mentioned how much fun he was having with the performance. He even expressed interest in carrying that same lighter, energetic tone into the planned sequel to Black Panther, which later became Black Panther: Wakanda Forever. In hindsight, that recording session became especially meaningful, as it ultimately marked one of Boseman’s final contributions to the Marvel universe before his passing in 2020 after a private battle with colon cancer.

During the conversation, Kevin Feige, who has predicted Sinners to win, also addressed the intense pressure that comes with creating films in globally beloved franchises. Reflecting on the constant chatter across platforms like YouTube, TikTok, and online forums, the Marvel Studios chief admitted that paying too much attention to internet discourse can quickly become overwhelming. According to Feige, the sheer volume of fan theories and opinions can easily cloud a filmmaker’s judgment if they try to follow every conversation happening online.

Fellow director Shawn Levy echoed that sentiment, explaining that filmmakers must sometimes tune out the noise to protect the creative process. Levy noted that working on major franchises like Deadpool & Wolverine or upcoming entries in the Star Wars universe requires trusting the original vision that sparked the project. The panel ultimately highlighted how even the most successful creators must navigate criticism, test screenings, and internet speculation while staying focused on the story they set out to tell.
