Keanu Reeves could be trading John Wick’s gun-fu for a bruising new partnership with Don Lee, and James Wan might be the man calling the shots in The Gangster, The Cop, The Devil. Wan has not directed a feature film since 2023’s Aquaman and the Lost Kingdom, keeping busy producing horror hits like Saw X, The Nun II, and Insidious: The Red Door while overseeing Atomic Monster’s merger with Blumhouse Productions.

Now, Wan is reportedly developing The Gangster, The Cop, The Devil, with Reeves potentially leading the charge opposite Lee.

Keanu Reeves could be leading The Gangster, The Cop, The Devil

Keanu Reeves could soon find himself on the wrong side of the law, the right side of a gangster, or somewhere delightfully complicated in between. According to The Hollywood Reporter, the actor is negotiating to star in Paramount Pictures’ reimagining of the 2019 South Korean crime thriller The Gangster, The Cop, The Devil. Don Lee, who starred in the original, is returning to reprise his role.

The original film follows a gangster and a police detective who form an unlikely alliance to hunt down a serial killer after the gangster becomes one of the killer’s targets. That uneasy partnership gives the remake a delicious recipe for shifting loyalties, dangerous encounters, and two very different men forced to work together. With Reeves potentially joining Lee, the new version could have a formidable pair at its center.

The production has also assembled a heavyweight team behind the camera, with Lee producing through Big Punch Global. Sylvester Stallone and D. Matt Geller are producing through Balboa Productions, alongside Chris S. Lee of B&C Group and Jang Won-seok, CEO of BA Entertainment. According to The Hollywood Reporter, Lorenzo di Bonaventura has also joined the producing team, giving this crime thriller plenty of muscle before filming even begins.

Beyond the action thrills of his upcoming CIA movie, Keanu Reeves could be stepping into the legacy of a South Korean crime classic.

The legacy of the original The Gangster, The Cop, The Devil

Keanu Reeves may be stepping into more than just another crime thriller if his negotiations for The Gangster, The Cop, The Devil work out. The 2019 South Korean original arrived at the Cannes Film Festival, where it screened in the prestigious Midnight Screenings section. Its international exposure helped introduce a gripping collision of gangland violence and serial-killer suspense to a wider audience.

The film also showcased Don Lee’s signature blend of intimidating physicality and unexpected heart, an appeal that would later reach Marvel audiences through Eternals. By bringing gritty gangster politics together with a relentless murder investigation, the original carved out its own space between South Korean crime dramas like New World and thrillers like I Saw the Devil. Now, a potential Reeves-led remake has that reputation to build on.
