Hollywood has long had a fascination with onscreen chemistry, particularly when it spills beyond the carefully choreographed business of filmmaking. Some partnerships leave audiences wondering where the characters end and the actors begin. Kathleen Turner and Michael Douglas had precisely that effect, building a memorable cinematic partnership across three films that made their characters' combustible dynamic a 1980s Hollywood signature.
Decades later, the stories behind that celebrated chemistry have acquired a new dimension. In light of Michael Douglas' revelation of their once-secret romance, their onscreen partnership had given audiences three distinctly different takes on their chemistry.
Kathleen Turner and Michael Douglas’ iconic 1980s movies
Kathleen Turner and Michael Douglas first paired up in Robert Zemeckis’ Romancing the Stone in 1984, an action-adventure romantic comedy that became a critical and commercial success. Turner played Joan Wilder, a romance novelist drawn into a dangerous Colombian adventure to rescue her kidnapped sister, while Douglas starred as Jack T. Colton, the roguish adventurer who helps her navigate the ordeal. Their pairing earned Turner a Golden Globe for Best Actress in a Motion Picture – Comedy or Musical.
The following year, the duo reunited for a sequel, The Jewel of the Nile, reprising Joan and Jack as their romantic escapades continued. Though the sequel struggled to match the original’s critical reception, it extended the characters’ story and capitalized on the chemistry audiences had embraced.

Their final 1980s pairing, The War of the Roses, a Warren Adler adaptation that even got a 2025 version, released in 1989, took that chemistry somewhere considerably darker. Directed by Danny DeVito, the black comedy cast Turner and Douglas as a married couple whose divorce escalates into a vicious battle.
Despite the intense on-screen push and pull, for years, their real-life relationship remained a closely guarded secret.
Michael Douglas reveals secret romance with Kathleen Turner
In an excerpt from his upcoming memoir, One Helluva Ride, Michael Douglas revealed that he and Kathleen Turner began a romantic relationship while filming Romancing the Stone in Mexico in 1984. The actor says they concealed the relationship for four decades, repeatedly denying that anything had happened between them.
“That was a lie,” Douglas writes, explaining that the secrecy was intended to protect his wife, Diandra Douglas, and their son, Cameron.

The revelation, shared exclusively with PEOPLE ahead of the memoir’s October 6 release, adds a personal dimension to the pair’s celebrated filmography. Their friendship endured, with the actors reuniting in Netflix’s The Kominsky Method in 2021. Their onscreen chemistry was never merely a product of performance, as Douglas now reveals; it was also shaped by a romance that remained private long after their 1980s films became Hollywood staples.
