Kate Winslet Is Not Surprised 'Titanic' Missed Out on the Big Letterboxd Accolade

Titanic is one of those movies in cinema history that not only set new box-office records but also set new standards for cinema in general. The spectacle that was Titanic will be forever etched in the minds of the viewers simply because of its grand scale, engrossing story, and the epic destruction in the climax.

The movie was further embellished by the lively performances by the leads Leonardo DiCaprio and Kate Winslet as Jack and Rose, respectively.

Despite the love and acclaim the movie continues to receive, much like its centrepiece, it too hits the iceberg, courtesy of Kate Winslet's lack of confidence in the movie being chosen for a Letterboxd accolade.

Kate Winslet unfazed by Titanic’s loss at Letterboxd's prized recognition

When Kate Winslet was asked by Letterboxd to guess her most “four favorited” movie on the Letterboxd platform, her first answer was not Titanic, as it should be according to most. She picked Eternal Sunshine of the Spotless Mind instead, and surprisingly, she was right. The interviewer asked if she was surprised that Titanic did not make the cut.

“No, I'm not actually,” Winslet replied.

She then went on to explain her reasoning behind the guess. According to her, since the Letterboxd platform is a place where real cinema and phenomenal directors and their out-of-the-box ideas are celebrated, that is why she felt that Eternal Sunshine of the Spotless Mind is fit for the position.

She also noted that Michel Gondry, the director of the film, has an unbelievable cult following, which further helps the case for the move. It makes her happy to see that the film still resonates with today’s generations, and she continues to support the film just like Titanic

Kate Winslet was not the only one asked this question; Ethan Hawke also took a crack at this.

Letterboxd also asked the same question to Ethan Hawke, and his guess did not really match the audience’s pick. He picked Before Sunrise as the most four favorited movie of his career, but was surprised to find out the real answer. The interviewer revealed Dead Poets Society as the actual answer, noting that Before Sunrise was the obvious guess.

Dead Poets Society holds up, huh?” This was Hawke’s reaction to the answer.

He immediately added that both the movies held up pretty well in contemporary times, with the changing perspective of society on certain things and issues. While being entirely different in themes, both films are deeply rooted in emotional attachment and the connections humans share with one another.

The four favorited movies of both actors are a few decades old but still command a pretty special place among the viewers, which signifies the timelessness and universal appeal of cinema. Movies, when made with love, care, and deep passion, can evoke feelings that are difficult to feel otherwise. Nevertheless, Kate Winslet might appear in the new Lord of the Rings sequel next, whereas Ethan Hawke is planning his 10th collaboration with Richard Linklater. In the meantime, one can revisit the beautiful movies mentioned above.
