With the final curtain of Michael only a day away, the spotlight has dimmed unexpectedly on Kat Graham's casting as Diana Ross. It has been confirmed that she will no longer appear in the Michael Jackson biopic. Though she was initially cast and expressed immense gratitude in 2024 for the privilege of portraying the legendary singer who introduced the Jackson 5 to the world, the last-minute change has now altered the film’s final ensemble just before its global debut.

The Vampire Diaries actress, who intended to honor Diana Ross and Black women through her performance, has now spoken about her exit from the film.

With one day left before Michael releases, Kat Graham posted an update on her Instagram story and X about her role. She confirmed that she would no longer appear as Diana Ross in the Michael Jackson biopic Michael. Along with that, she cited legal considerations for the removal of her filmed scenes from the final cut.

"Unfortunately, those moments are no longer part of the final cut, though the team worked hard to preserve as much of the story as possible," The actress made sure that no drama could be sniffed out of her statement. That was ensured as she declared that she worked with an "incredible cast" and how the team tried to salvage her presence.

If Kat Graham’s scenes had remained in Michael, the film would likely have explored the near-mythic bond between Diana Ross and Michael Jackson, positioning her as both mentor and early influence. It may have touched on their collaboration on The Wiz in 1978, where their creative connection strengthened on set. Ross’s glamour and stage presence could also have been used to hint at her subtle impact on Michael Jackson’s evolution into the 'King of Pop,' something fans can now only imagine as they look forward to the rest of Michael's cast performance.
