Highly likely, as Urban has a solid explanation for why his character has developed into an extreme killer.

Season 5's Billy Butcher will stop at nothing to accomplish his objective of destroying all superheroes, even if it requires him to give up his essential human nature. Speaking with Entertainment Tonight, Karl Urban discussed how Butcher in The Boys season 5, which premiered April 8, 2026, on Prime Video, has become even more dangerous than before, solely driven by his mission.

"[Butcher]'s the most dangerous, lethal version of the character we have had to date. He's driven to finally get the job done. You know, this season, that yes, Butcher thinks he's doing what he's doing for the right reason because he correctly perceives an existential threat," Urban told the outlet.

As Homelander becomes an immortal, Butcher thinks humanity is actually under threat. The actor made a key point, noting that all the season 5 events will confirm each of Butcher's warnings since season 3. Urban has also added that Butcher does not consider himself a hero, but he believes that his extreme actions are justified, as they are motivated by the right reasons.

The final season's increasing stakes lead to this transformation of Butcher into a ruthless, single-minded force, all the while carrying forth his extremely tragic backstory. The series is set to conclude with Season 5 delivering crucial battles and a spectacular finale as Butcher uses his tactical abilities to the fullest to take on Homelander. Urban's remarks on his character suggest a darker turn in the upcoming episodes that will unravel Butcher's struggles to hold onto the vestiges of his humanity in the face of the most dangerous threat to date.
