Of course, there was one rather wolf-shaped scratch on the announcement: Wolverine is still without a face. And it looks like the competition for the role might have gotten smaller, as Karl Urban, a popular fan-cast for the role, may reportedly reject the offer before it even reaches the table, out of respect for Hugh Jackman.

It seems that unlike the comics, where the world rarely gives the X-Men their due, Karl Urban is prepared to give Wolverine the respect he deserves.

Karl Urban just gave Wolverine fan-casters something considerably sharper than adamantium claws: a polite rejection. During a Karl Urban Q&A at GalaxyCon Raleigh 2026, the actor was asked whether he would play Wolverine if the Marvel universe were rebooted, and his answer was immediate. He would “probably respectfully” pass, largely because Hugh Jackman has made the mutant his own.

“I would not want to touch it just out of respect,” Urban said. That is about as definitive as a Wolverine fan can get without actually snapping three claws into the casting table. Karl Urban praised Hugh Jackman as “so good” in the role, singling out Logan and Deadpool & Wolverine as proof that the character is already in exceptionally capable hands. For Karl Urban, replacing that legacy would feel less like a casting opportunity and more like trespassing.

Yet even after the GalaxyCon Raleigh 2026 Q&A, it is easy to understand why fans had pictured Karl Urban behind those adamantium claws in the first place. Hugh Jackman did not simply play Wolverine; he spent more than two decades turning a snarling, wounded comic-book mutant into one of cinema’s most recognizable antiheroes. Despite early doubts about his height and lack of a tough-guy résumé, Jackman found Logan’s volatile temper, bruised soul, and quiet vulnerability. His physical intensity made every claw unsheathed feel earned.

What truly made the performance endure was the humanity beneath Wolverine’s rage: his loyalty, grief, tenderness, and desperate search for belonging. From his complicated bond with Jean Grey to his protective relationship with Laura in Logan, Jackman allowed the character to evolve rather than simply growl louder.
