Fans walking into Mortal Kombat II expected plenty of brutal fights, iconic fatalities, and classic character moments from the beloved video game franchise. What many also expected was the beginning of Johnny Cage and Sonya Blade’s famous romance, one of the most recognizable relationships in Mortal Kombat history. However, despite sharing several scenes together throughout the sequel, the film deliberately avoided turning the duo into a couple.
That creative decision was not accidental. While promoting the newly released sequel, Karl Urban explained that the filmmakers wanted to let the relationship evolve naturally over time instead of rushing it into the story immediately. The choice also allowed Sonya Blade’s arc to stand independently, setting up a slower and potentially more impactful dynamic in future installments.

Although Mortal Kombat II introduced Johnny Cage as a major new addition to the franchise, the movie stopped short of diving into his romantic future with Sonya Blade. Instead, the sequel focused on building chemistry, mutual respect, and tension between the two characters while keeping the relationship firmly in its early stages. Speaking to CinemaBlend while promoting the film, Karl Urban explained that he was excited by the idea of letting the relationship develop gradually across future movies rather than forcing it immediately into the sequel. As he stated:
“That is an element of the evolution of Johnny Cage and Sonya's story that I very much look forward to play. I think that that'll be a fun extra dynamic to add to the ingredients. And, you know, evolve these characters beyond just sort of like a work relationship or a fighting tournament relationship. I'm definitely down for that. I think it'd be great.”
Karl Urban’s comments suggested that the franchise viewed Johnny and Sonya’s connection as a long-term storyline instead of a quick payoff. Considering the pair eventually become one of the franchise’s defining couples in the games, the slower approach could ultimately make their relationship feel more earned if future sequels continue exploring it.
That slower storytelling approach also connected directly to the filmmakers’ larger plans for Johnny Cage’s role in the franchise.
Karl Urban’s Johnny Cage brought a different energy to Mortal Kombat II
Following the release of the 2021 film, Mortal Kombat II shifted away from being purely an origin setup and leaned more heavily into the tournament mythology fans had been waiting to see. Returning characters like Liu Kang, Sonya Blade, and Sub-Zero found themselves pulled into a more structured conflict between realms, while new additions expanded the scale of the story.
At the center of that tonal shift was Karl Urban’s take on Johnny Cage. Rather than portraying Cage as a straightforward action hero, Urban leaned into the character’s theatrical confidence, celebrity ego, and sarcastic humor. The performance balanced comedy with combat, giving the sequel a noticeably different rhythm compared to its predecessor.

For audiences familiar with Urban’s more intense performances in projects like The Boys and Dredd, his version of Johnny Cage showcased a different side of his screen presence. Instead of relying purely on aggression, the actor embraced timing and charisma, helping Cage emerge as one of the film’s standout characters after the sequel’s theatrical release.
The decision to avoid rushing Johnny and Sonya’s romance also gave both characters more breathing room individually. Sonya Blade’s storyline remained focused on the larger conflict rather than revolving around a love interest, while Johnny Cage was allowed time to establish himself inside the franchise before entering a deeper emotional arc.
