Andrew Garfield is not losing sleep over the Oscars. The actor has earned praise for his transformative performance as Desmond Doss in Hacksaw Ridge and received an Oscar nomination. He was also nominated again for Tick, Tick... Boom!

However, he has yet to win an Academy Award. Now, the buzz has resurfaced again after Garfield portrayed OpenAI co-founder and CEO Sam Altman in Luca Guadagnino’s Artificial. But while speculation mounts over his potential for an Oscar win, Garfield appears more focused on something else.

Andrew Garfield talks about Oscar chances for Artificial

Andrew Garfield recently stepped out for the 2026 BFI London Film Festival. During a conversation with Variety, he was asked about the Oscar buzz surrounding his performance in Artificial. But the actor seems more focused on his work than on the awards hype.

“As I get older, I’m starting to understand that the things outside of ourselves we just have no control over. And the only consistent thing for me is trying to make work that I feel proud of. And I feel really really proud of this film,” he said.

The Oscar buzz surrounding the film is not surprising, considering the appreciation it received at the New York Film Festival. The film follows the story of how OpenAI CEO Sam Altman was fired from the company and later reinstated. And Garfield stepped into the role, bringing Altman’s journey during those turbulent days to the big screen, and there is chatter that he could secure a place in the best supporting actor category.

Just like Garfield said in the recent interview, the actor has made every effort to do justice to the role. Apart from the mannerisms, Garfield focused on the psychological aspects of the character to better understand the person he was portraying. This involved him exploring what it feels like to lead a company amid the complexities of the fiercely competitive AI race.

Meanwhile, Garfield has also sparked curiosity with his comments about AI, adding another layer of intrigue to the film and his portrayal of Altman.

Andrew Garfield experienced a few changes after starring in the film Artificial. One such change, as he revealed to Variety at the New York Film Festival, was that he had become more fearful of technology and had less faith in it. He further added that he feels much about the technology remains unknown.

“It feels like the people who are encouraging us to use the technologies don’t exactly know its capacities themselves. That feels a little irresponsible, to me personally,” he said.

The actor also mentioned that he had been using chatbots as a fancy Google. However, he revealed that he stopped using them after filming Artificial. Now, if the film had such an impact on Garfield, how will audiences respond to it?
