Jonathan Groff is moving between screen and stage projects with the ease of a performer who knows that every medium demands a different kind of magic. From playing the meticulous FBI profiler Holden Ford in Netflix’s Mindhunter to voicing Kristoff in Disney’s Frozen franchise, Groff has built a career on transformation. Now, the Tony Award winner is heading back to the stage for a production that brings him closer to his Pennsylvania roots.
And this time, instead of a musical score or a familiar Disney melody, Groff will have a deeply affecting story of grief, compassion, and forgiveness to carry.

As The Hollywood Reporter reported, Jonathan Groff will star in Jessica Dickey’s solo play The Amish Project, directed by Sarna Lapine. Performances are scheduled to begin on February 10, 2027, at Broadway’s Broadhurst Theatre. The play explores the aftermath of a schoolhouse shooting in an Amish community and the extraordinary response of forgiveness that followed the tragedy.

The production marks another significant chapter in Groff’s recent Broadway run, following his Tony-nominated performance as Bobby Darin in Just in Time and his Tony-winning turn as Franklin Shepard in Merrily We Roll Along. In a statement, the actor praised the writing’s urgency and its exploration of forgiveness as a radical human act.
“... I am profoundly grateful to be bringing Jessica’s play to Broadway alongside Sarna and this incredible team,” Groff said, as per The Hollywood Reporter.
Yet, while The Amish Project draws on a tragedy close to Groff’s Pennsylvania upbringing, the actor has hardly stayed in one theatrical lane. His recent choices reveal a performer equally willing to tackle Shakespearean comedy, intimate musicals, and ambitious screen adaptations, making his next Broadway chapter part of a much wider artistic journey.
From Shakespeare to the screen, Jonathan Groff keeps expanding his range
Jonathan Groff’s Broadway return comes as he continues to explore different corners of the performing arts. He recently made his Royal Shakespeare Company debut as Rosalind in an all-male production of William Shakespeare’s As You Like It, directed by Daniel Evans. The role offers a fresh challenge for an actor whose stage résumé already includes the rock-driven intensity of Spring Awakening, the historical spectacle of Hamilton, and the intimate emotional storytelling of Stephen Sondheim’s Merrily We Roll Along.

His screen slate is equally varied. Groff has completed production on Octet, adapted from Dave Malloy’s musical and directed by Lin-Manuel Miranda, and the independent film Trust the Man, a Vietnam War thriller starring Daniel Radcliffe. He is also set to reprise his voice role as Kristoff in Frozen 3. These projects demonstrate how Groff continues to move between screen acting, musical theater, and classical drama without being confined to one lane.
For The Amish Project, however, the draw is more intimate than spectacle. Groff will bring a story rooted in a community close to his own upbringing to Broadway audiences, placing forgiveness and human resilience at the center of his next performance.
