While The Mandalorian and Grogu had already conquered every lane of anticipation across the fandom, Jon Favreau has now finally revealed why fan-favourite giants like Ahsoka Tano and Grand Admiral Thrawn were completely missing from the film. If billion-dollar franchise domination had a ruler, Star Wars would probably still be sitting on the throne, and now, following the film’s massive May 22, 2026, theatrical rollout, the missing characters have sparked almost as much chaos online as the movie itself.

Here is what director Jon Favreau had to say about the shocking absence of Ahsoka and Thrawn from The Mandalorian and Grogu.

Fan-favourite giants like Ahsoka Tano (Rosario Dawson) and Grand Admiral Thrawn (Lars Mikkelsen), may have dominated theories for months, but Jon Favreau ultimately kept both away from The Mandalorian and Grogu to stop the movie from drowning in Disney+ continuity chaos. Co-writing the project alongside Noah Kloor and Dave Filoni, Favreau explained that the original plan once involved The Mandalorian Season 4 before the story transformed into a theatrical release, forcing the team to rethink how interconnected the film should remain.

The filmmaker admitted a traditional fourth season would have expected audiences to already watch “three seasons previously and frankly everything else on Disney+,” making a cleaner standalone experience the studio’s biggest priority.

"When we were discussing doing a fourth season of [The Mandalorian], which was put on hold, and then the idea of doing a theatrical presentation… It changed the way we approached how interconnected things should be. A fourth season of a show would have assumed that you saw three seasons previously and, frankly, everything else on Disney+. That's the nature of a serialized long-form TV story," Favreau told Entertainment Weekly.

Adding further to the absence debate, Dave Filoni later clarified that Star Wars crossovers are never meant to exist purely for fan service chaos. Speaking during EW’s Debunked series, Filoni explained that character appearances only happen when they genuinely fit the emotional journey of the story, further revealing that Ahsoka Tano originally entered The Mandalorian specifically to help expand Grogu’s history rather than simply forcing a crossover moment.

‘Star Wars: The Mandalorian and Grogu’ Targets $90M Memorial Day Opening as Disney Eyes Another Box Office Win

Ending a seven-year theatrical drought, The Mandalorian and Grogu already look ready to detonate both the global box office and fandom internet chaos in full galactic force.

About The Mandalorian And Grogu

Directed by Jon Favreau, The Mandalorian and Grogu officially launched on May 22, 2026, dominating the Memorial Day weekend while becoming the franchise’s shortest live-action theatrical entry since Rogue One: A Star Wars Story. Despite Disney reportedly keeping the production budget near $165 million, one of the studio’s leanest Star Wars film spends, the movie is already tracking toward a massive $160 million global opening storm, while Grogu merchandise sales and Galaxy’s Edge integrations are expected to unleash an even bigger profit wave beyond theatres.

Carrying a runtime of 132 minutes and a PG-13 rating loaded with heavy sci-fi action, the film expands the Disney+ universe into a full-scale cinematic battlefield. Set after the fall of the Galactic Empire, the story follows Din Djarin and Grogu as the New Republic sends them after a dangerous warlord named Coin, dragging the duo into rescue missions, Hutt negotiations, and underworld warfare surrounding Rotta the Hutt. Pedro Pascal returns as Mando alongside Sigourney Weaver, Jeremy Allen White, and even a surprise supporting appearance from Martin Scorsese.

And now, with The Mandalorian and Grogu already storming theatres worldwide, Star Wars seems to have officially reignited another wave of box-office domination, fandom chaos, and galactic hype all over again.
