Jon Favreau has finally started opening the next galactic route after teasing that the future of Din Djarin and Grogu stretches far beyond The Mandalorian and Grogu. Arriving as the first theatrical Star Wars release since 2019, the May 22, 2026, blockbuster instantly threw fandom back into bounty-hunter warfare, collapsing Imperial shadows, and full-scale galaxy chaos. And as Grogu mania once again floods theatres worldwide, questions surrounding the franchise’s next mission have already started dominating the Star Wars universe.
But what exactly does director Jon Favreau have planned beyond Mando and Grogu’s next galactic mission?

After surviving Dejarik battles, taking down massive AT-AT machines, and barely escaping deadly dragonsnake poison, Din Djarin and Grogu may still be far from the end of their galactic journey. Jon Favreau recently admitted he already has multiple ideas planned for what could come next after The Mandalorian and Grogu.
Speaking to Entertainment Weekly, Favreau described the expanding Star Wars universe as a giant “garden” full of growing storylines, teasing that he constantly thinks ahead about the next evolution for both Mando and Grogu inside the galaxy. Ultimately, he described the duo’s future as a “wide open canvas."
"I think about it creatively, and so for me it's like a garden or a greenhouse with all the different storylines and characters. I see opportunity in all of them, because these storylines have taken on a life of their own, and I love the progression of these characters, and I like to think forward as to what's the next step for both of them," Favreau told Entertainment Weekly.
Favreau further revealed that Dave Filoni has been deeply mapping out how larger Star Wars figures like Ahsoka and Thrawn fit into the franchise’s next era. While Filoni reportedly focuses on the galaxy’s larger long-term strategy, Favreau admitted he personally still carries “a lot of notes and ideas” for where Mando and Grogu’s smaller corner of the Star Wars universe could head next.
Longtime fans may also recall that Favreau previously revealed he had already written a fourth season of The Mandalorian, intended to help set up Ahsoka Season 2, before the plans were ultimately paused in favour of transforming the story into a much larger theatrical event for broader global audiences.
However, with so much galactic chaos already unfolding, the air around the next mission inside The Mandalorian now seems to have completely taken over franchise headlines, too.
Is there a The Mandalorian season 4?
While discussing the future of the franchise, Jon Favreau noticeably refused to directly confirm whether another Disney+ season would actually happen, instead pointing attention toward Dave Filoni, whose creative control inside Lucasfilm has massively expanded in recent years. Speaking to Variety, Favreau jokingly remarked, “You should talk to Dave Filoni over there because he’s running the show now,” quietly hinting that Filoni may now hold the biggest power over this corner of the Star Wars universe.
"It’s a good question. You should talk to Dave Filoni over there because he's running the show now,” Favreau told Variety.

The uncertainty becomes even more chaotic considering Favreau had previously confirmed that scripts for a fourth season were already written before The Mandalorian Season 3 even concluded. However, after the Hollywood strikes reshaped studio schedules, Lucasfilm reportedly pivoted away from Disney+ plans and transformed the storyline into The Mandalorian and Grogu instead, which eventually entered production in California during 2024.
Favreau later admitted the original Season 4 storylines could not simply be compressed into one film because the scripts heavily relied on interconnected Disney+ arcs and larger crossover threads tied directly to Ahsoka Season 2 and Grand Admiral Thrawn’s growing galactic threat. And with Jon Favreau now quietly opening new galactic routes for Mando and Grogu, whatever mission chaos erupts next inside The Mandalorian and Grogu universe may only be a matter of time.
